Shandies only!
Yep, as of Monday I'm only going to drink shandies up until London Marathon. And not just twice as many, fewer drinks and half the strength. I don't drink a lot but it's not uncommon for me to have 4 pints during the week and get fairly drunk on a Friday or Saturday. But no more! No! I will be staying sober for 10 weeks now and I'd better improve or it will just prove that alcohol makes no difference and all that.
On a serious note, it should ensure I sleep better, and psychologically I'l feel purer and stronger. Whether it makes any difference to mya ctual ability, we shall see!
One caveat is John Hutchins' stag do for which I am best man. He stupidly organised his wedding for the day before London Marathon so I can't go but I should make an effort at his stag do and have 1 or 2 drinks.
Right, my first race sine Florence marathon tomorrow and the first XC race that I've done where I've actually needed spikes for since 2008, so should be interesting.
Night all!
Ben

OI! I was just more organised than the LoMo organising committee. They should have looked at other major events on the day they picked. Shocking. Anyway, you'll have a crowd around a TV screen on the IoW on Sunday morning. Go for it Tiger Tim.
Nutkins Posted on February 25th, 2010mind set to win!!!
Pleasure Ben- you deserve every encouragement as you are totally dedicated and work hard in this tough hard sport.
mentor again Posted on February 16th, 2010One question- does your coach mentally prepare you for top races, and how do you sort your mind and thoughts out before a race?
It seems that more and more mental toughness is a vital element in winning the race! But do coaches use it or know how to apply it in their athletes?
Thanks 'mentor'. You're right. I am fairly good with food anyway but will make sure I cook myself good dinners and late nights are definitley out too. Again, I'm fairly good with sleep, unless I've been out drinking, when I don't sleep so well!
Ben Posted on February 15th, 2010Thanks for the support though - I think you may be right that it's not the actual physical effect of giving it up sometimes, but the pyschological effect - knowing you gave up so much and you're damn well not going to let it beat you, when the going gets hard at 20 miles!
race prep
Ben,
mentor Posted on February 15th, 2010As well as no late nights, junk or fatty food!
Start the marathon race prep now to get you in top physical and mental shape. Like boxers who go to isolation training camp before a major fight- full concentration, focused mind, total sacrifices are required if you are to make an impact.
Start the psychological (imagery) prep now so you will be rearing to go!
Good luck and give it your all- you are fit enough, and deserve a good pb.
Cheers shandy man.
