I hate Doctors!
I'm beginning to get bored of all of this. So my 'infection' test results show I don't have an infection, well at least not a UTI one. The latest idea is that I may have mumps. Mumps is not really curable so would be a bit crap if that was the case: I'd just have to wait for it to go away.
I am seeing a urologist in, wait for it, FIVE WEEKS to check what may be wrong. Great. I could be dead by then, or completely cured. Either way it's 2 weeks before the Europeans and not much use to me. At least I am running pain free again and although I still feel a bit laboured in training, but not awful. Just not superfresh, everything feels easy like I would want to. I've decided to just crack on with training - I can't afford to be cautious really and the odds are that it'll all change and I'll start to feel great again. I hope. The Dr. 'thought' that as long as I'm not in pain, then I'm ok and shouldn't worry about any swelling. That's easy for him to say.
I had results back from my blood test to check serum ferritin levels. At 92ug/L I'm actually pretty healthy on that front. I think 40-175ug/L is the healthy range so I'm nicely in the middle of that.
I've nearly spent a week in the altitude tent and am up to 2,000m simulated altitude now. I'm coping fine with it - no headaches or poor sleeping so only benefits on that front!
Well, I'm doing a half marathon in Guernsey this week, but only running it at marathon pace. Will be a good training session, and it would be great if I felt comfortable and easy. A confidence boost would be great!
I don't mean to be negative, just getting frustrated with it all! I promise a more positive post next week. I'll update on the logic behind altitude tents in your bedroom!

Comments On "I hate Doctors!"
Hi guys,
Ben Posted on July 5th, 2010I used the tent for 2 weeks before going to Font Romeu. UKa lent it to me and I have access to ring the physiologist about it to discuss how it affects me and so on. I am told to train as normal, but see if I feel any effects at all regarding recovery and fatigue, or not sleeping well.
Regards to ipods - I use mine a lot! Not as a training aid though - only to dull the boredom on the steady runs. I never use for sessions and I wouldn't rely on it too much if I were you. Are your runs quicker because of the music? If you're not getting tired this is fine I would say but you shouldn't be knackering yourself. Keep the sessions strong and the steady runs as recovery!
music
hi,
runner Posted on June 27th, 2010as a runner im begining to increase my times for 1500m. My steady runs out of training are strong however I run them with an ipod. Just wondering if it is a good idea incase im used to running with music as a distraction and when it comes to a race am unable to be distracted so run less well. My runs are quicker with an ipod.
thanks
Training/ Altitude
Hi Ben,
Road Man Posted on June 21st, 2010First and most importantly I hope you are on the mend soon, we all know how hard you have training to be in the position you are in at present i.e qualify for Euro's. You are an inspiration to many of us out there training hard.
I was just wondering how long you have been using the altitude tent for and where the funding came from for this? Did UKA offer this facility freely to all the endurance guys? How long have you got it for and what sort of training did they offer with it? If so I think it certainly is a step in the right direction, I hope it helps you in your quest to gain that extra edge.
Hope you cooking on gas come thr Euro's
Best of look
altitude tent
Here's the only link i can find Ben, for some reason there seems to be plenty available in the USA from many suppliers, yet they are much harder to come by here in the UK.

From what i can gather, its £4k for the altitude simulator, then a further £400 for the tent to go with it, i can't see one being much use without the other somehow.
Brent - they actually have managed to fasttrack me to a uka doctor, but I'm not sure he will diagnose me - just explain how my running may be affected by the various possibilities of what it MAY be or the treatment...? I'll update!
Ben Posted on June 17th, 2010Frustrated - you sound disgruntled. Why so upset? Why so unfair? Surely it's like a camping holiday!
Docdes - yes, ok. Point taken! Damn NHS!
Ant69 - no. How much?
The TENT!!!!
Problem with altitude tents when you have a wife/partner is its not fair on them to inflict this on them!
frustrated Posted on June 17th, 2010Plus not condusive to a good sex life!
Another problem for elites to overcome eh?
Surely UKa can get you to a bloody doctor? They have money for an Altitude tent but not to send a team member to a private doctor??
Brent Posted on June 17th, 2010Hi Ben, best of luck in the training, surely it is the NHS rather than doctors that is to blame for the 5 week delay in seeing a urologist.

i've been looking into this myself, but hey, have you seen the price on the things ! Perhaps Runnerslife can buy one for everyone to share ;)
