Poole 10k
Well I came into this race not feeling 100%. I've felt tired in training and had set myself up for a pretty horrific day at the office. In reality, it was 'ok'. Not awful but certainly not what I would hope for if I was firing on all cylinders.
I set off and tucked in behind Toby Lambert who was following a Kenyan guy I didn't know. Steve Way, Haggai Chepkonwy and Williard Chianhu were also in the front group early on, sat behind me. After a mile or so the Kenyan at the front had a small gap. I covered this mile in 4.40 and Toby was chasing him and also had a gap on me of a few seconds. We then reached the coast where the strong breeze is behind you. I tried to run at a pace that felt comfortable and wasn't overly fussed about racing Toby. If he came back to me then great, but I wanted to try and have a solid run, not blow up and have an awful race (if possible!). The 3rd mile of the 2 lap course heads back to the start and had a strong headwind as well as a few hills. I was on my own in 3rd now, but only 20m behind was Haggai.
We started the 2nd lap and I started to feel pretty heavy legged, obviously the first mile was pretty quick and this as well as me not feeling 100%. I didn't enjoy the 2nd half much to be honest and mile 4 was a 5.12 mile, again with some headwind and a bridge. Contrast this with mile 1 (the same part of course) and obviously it was a pretty quick start! The Kenyan guy was well ahead now but I was still chasing Toby to try and keep me focussed. It was a hot day and I just wanted to hold it together until the end. My gap on 4th gradually grew, and Toby gradually pulled away form me also.
I finished in 3rd place in 31.07. Not awful but I would like to be running faster than this really. I'm getting a blood test to check blood iron, and perhaps my body is still adapting to the hard training again as well. I'm not panicking at this stage, but would like to start feeling good again please!
Gordon Mugi - 28.55!
Toby - 30.28
Me - 31.07
