4th February, Snow day at the office

We get one day of snow in the UK and the country falls apart, same with a bit too much rain or heat. We don’t do extremes very well or cope with them, but as athletes the sessions don’t stop, we just have to find a way!

Yesterday, I was a due a long awaited blood test, so the snow stopped that one in its tracks. So headed out for a morning run in the white stuff and enjoyed the rather testing conditions. Got home and had a massive bowl of cereal, too big but had two boxes close to finish so just chucked it in a big bowl!

I thought the indoor track would have either been open all day or closed all day, so at 11am decided to check. Closing in next hour was the info I received! With 300m’s on the track later, it was now or never. I Jumped in Car (lucky 4x4!) so crawled my way to Cardiff, and into NIAC, with 30mins to knock the session out. I figured I had done a 4 mile warm-up so a quick jog and fast drills, then straight into strides. Not so much zip in your legs, at the time you are normally reading the pages of 'runnerslfe.co.uk & ‘letsrun.com’ but this was not a normal day.

First rep of 6 was sluggish and that cereal was not feeling great half way down my stomach.  Each rep got better and the last was the fastest. Average was a little off what I wanted from a nice evening session, with time between my morning run. But given the conditions I was pleased to have it in the bag!

Got home for lunch and realised morning run and session were done for the day, so after a breakfast burrito, headed out with a makeshift sledge to enjoy the rest of the day!

God bless indoor tracks and was lucky my one stayed open long enough to get my session in for the day. Hope the rest of you found a way to get your sessions done in the snow?

Be good

James
