1st Post - Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year :) !!!

I wasnt really sure what to write at first as this is my first EVER blog... Would Just like to say; hope everyone had a good christmas and new year!!

Ive had quite a stressful christmas on the running side of things due to the fact I tore my calf, I think I did this early November however im my desperation not to admit I had an injury I ran/limped through until the European Trials in Liverpool where I qualified for the European Championships in Dublin on 13th December. Before the race, in the warm up it was sore, although during the race I felt no pain at all until I crossed the line and my whole right calf seized up. Instead of doing what would of been the sensible thing to do and tell Liz, I decided that I wouldn't say anything and just push through until after the Europeans and then get it sorted.... Well that planned failed amazingly, when I was running/limping on the treadmill one night and who walked round the corner? It was Liz, I did notice her but thought id just carry on and looked down, however when I looked up again she was standing there right in front of me, "Are you limping?", I thought well I cant lie because shes been standing there for a while watching me, "Yes, a little", When actually I dont even think you could call it running at all so I was told to "get off the treadmill". That was it then, the next 2 weeks in the lead up to the Europeans I was lucky to cover 10miles, and all of them painful. In hindsight I should have pulled out of the European Team, but i'm sort of glad I didn't in a sense that I now have the experience of the Europeans but also i'm not sat here wondering 'what if', I know the result, no matter how terrible it was.... Lesson learned I hope!!! :

Since the Europeans I haven't ran at all, which is very frustrating as I feel my day is messed up and routine gone if I dont run in the mornings, however I have taken my frustration out on the bike and cross trainer in the gym. Its really bad because nobody knew me when I first went in the gym, however as ive been somewhat of a regular since I came home at christmas, all the gym staff now know who I am, "The girl, who always looks like your about collapse when you stop"... Reputations are great!!!!

I'm not an athlete who says "I only do this, or I only do that", I am open about my training, as I believe that why would I want to hide how hard I work, Im not exceptionally talented, I have to work really hard for what I get. I train everyday, Most days I train twice, and so far this winter have been averaging 85miles per week (apart from the last month due to injury). As I believe this is what is going to get me the success I want in the future. Some may believe this is too much, however im only ranked about 5th in the country so far over cross country in the Junior Ranks, so to me it means I still have alot of work to do. I am very open in discussing with others, my training programmes as I think athletes should share ideas and help each other become more successful, especially seeing as we have these "unbeatable africans"  who we want to beat.

Hopefully I can give you an insight into my training regime and life up in Scotland, which is where I moved to in July, away from my family and friends to train under the guidance of Liz McColgan, who herself was a very succesful athlete on British, World and Olympic Stage.  I hope to write up my training schedules, race reports and a general blog on various topics in which im involved with. I hope that by reading my blogs and training, it may help someone understand what its like competing on an International athletics scene, but also at home in Britain when you race in such an amazing atmosphere, with all your friends and GB Team Mates around you.

Right im off to bed, as I have to be up early tomorrow, as I got the all clear from the physio today, meaning I can start jogging a bit tomorrow, Never been so excited for a run in all my life...... I dont think :)

Hope to see everyone in the New Year, If you see me at races, please come up and say Hi :) Although if it is within an hour of the start of my race, dont expect too much of a response, as your most likely to be blanked (Am not being rude, just my mind is elsewhere) ... But any other time I am more than happy to chat.

Love XXX

Big Miles

"Thanks for taking the time out to reply and good to hear that you are on the mend.
You mention that a lot of the girls tend to be on big mileage. Are you able to divulge what sort of mileage the likes of Twell, Gorecka, Peel etc. are all doing. All set for bright futures in the sport if all goes well."

Thats ok :D . Yes, hopefully be back soon!

Yes we all train hard! I don't know exactly what sort of mileage the girls are on, but you dont get those results without lots of hard work. Yes fingers crossed all will go well and can compete as a very good senior.

Big Miles

"Hey Lily. Its nice and refreshing to see people such as yourself and Simon Lawson really giving it a good go and pushing the limits with regards to mileage and seeing just how good you can be.
Are you at University up in Scotland or just there training there with what promises to be a good group I believe?
What are your aims for the season? Or is it just a case of see what happens do to the injury you seem to be carrying?
Hope it all clears up sharpish.

Hi, Thank You!

No i'm working nearly full time in a hotel, well 25hours a week. Yes it is a very good group for me to train with, there is always someone to hang on to or lead out for some confidence, also there is about 5 or 6 people that are there to help out with timing you but also to talk to if you have a problem. Well if my leg is 100% in the next week then it shouldn't interrupt my season too badly, but I doubt the earliest I could be racing will be the National Cross Country at the best as I am planning a big block of training which I dont want to interrupt.

Its suprising me that everyone seems to be saying that were doing big mileage, but if you think Paula Radcliffe is reguarly running 140miles per week then she had to be doing the same if not more than myself at the age of 18..... Alot of other Juniors especially the Girls and alot of my Aldershot team mates are on this kind of mileage.

Thank You, it seems alot better when im out running in the morning!

Training

"Wow. 85 miles a week is very impressive for someone of your age. Keep up the good work and listen to your body better in future ;)"

Thank You :D

Ive increased it to this much over the last 18months-2years and will carry on doing so over the next few years as I change over from Junior athlete to Senior athlete. I will try and recognise the signs of injury in the future but with the amount of training I have planned for future its going to be a very fine line, but shall try :D

Training

"Seem to remember your dad was a hard trainer. Perhaps he could post his training on the site. Also look forward to seeing your updates. Good luck for 2010"

Yes he trained hard, I think everyone did back then. But then he himself will fully admit that he did waaaay too much quantity and not enough quality. He ran 180miles some weeks, but he says he should have run 120 but at a faster pace.... Just learning from those mistakes.

I think he would give his opinion on what he did right and what he did wrong and why somethings worked and why others didn't. He does a little coaching nowadays and offers help to those who ask but hes so busy at the moment!
