First Blog in Scotland

First blog back in Scotland... Wooo!! Been back here nearly a week now, training has got better, as you will see im running twice a day now and feeling very sore from the hips down :( The joys of increasing the training load :D Missing home so much though except the snow :D as we have none here up in Carnoustie... *TOUCH WOOD*

I went back to work this week which is kind of exciting because I wont be completely skint :D... and im feeling a bit better about training now, as i'm back running twice a day, working and had a little shopping trip in town with Becky (Brought things that I probably wont wear for a while, but I really liked it and Becky made me, so thats my excuse) which makes me feel 'normal' again. Im also having lots of physio treatment at the moment, because my legs are very tight, especially my calf, so just trying to keep it at bay, preventing a repeat injury; something I really dont want and dont need. If it is ok on Sunday, Im going to try and do some strides, so fingers crossed im able to do them without any problems, trying to stay positive about it and not let it get to me too much, which is quite hard. I think someone said to me your first injury is the hardest to deal with. Well im not planning on making it a regular occurence, so hope not to be going through this again for a long time.

If you've read my training blogs (Due to be updated on Sunday) you'll probably be thinking that ive increased my mileage quite quickly over the last 3 weeks however as its all just gentle running then I can get it quite high, with little issue. My body absorbs miles really well and they dont affect me, I can start a season on 60 miles for the first week if I wanted to (not tried to start it on any higher). It is just what my body can seem to handle and seeing as this is my first injury, I don't think i've done too badly so far in terms of injuries and training loads.

Im really sorry that its such a short blog, but nothing this week really interesting to report on has happened, just working, training, physiotherapy etc... I hope next week is a little bit more exciting and I might be reporting on a session??? Maybe....... I hope so!!

Thank You everyone for reading and commenting on my previous blogs, Please can you put your name in the 'name box' so I know who im replying to :D Just a bit strange otherwise :D

Love... X

"Hi Lily, some great reading on you blogs/training so far, keep up the good work.
I have a question aswell..... with you coming off an injury i read that after rest you ran and it still was a bit sore, now that you kinda back into it how do you know if you should/shouldn't be running on it? Just base it on reaction after each session?"

Hello :D , Thank You!! Yeah, I had to run, resting was getting too frustrating!! Its still got the tightness in it, which makes it a little sore at times, but ive had it checked out by the physio and he has told me that it has healed and its just tightness because its still a weak spot thats being protected, and to make it stronger I have to run :D. Yes, I base it on how it feels on the reaction I get the morning after by having a walk about before I go for a run, but to be honest I tend to still go for my run and judge it that way, if im limping then theres something wrong and if im not then I just get on with it.

Mileage/Coaching Reply

Hi,

Without going into too much detail, the reasons I moved away from my home in the South of England was because I had been offered an opportunity to train under the guidance of someone who has been where I want to go, but also I had been having problems with my athletics at home, It wasn't working out for me down there and I had stopped performing to the level that I wanted to, especially over the summer. If I hadn't come up to Scotland, I would probably be in the states on a scholarship now, and whilst that is still an option I have, I like the British Scene, this is where my friends and family are and also im guaranteed very good competition from the other girls over here.

I work nearly full time, and my boss is flexible with my athletics, as long as I give her plenty of notice if anythings going to change in terms of training times and whether or not im racing in next few weeks.

My move to Scotland did have everything to do with Liz coaching me, because otherwise I wouldn't have moved if I didn't have a coach up here. Im not one of these people that gets starstruck, and therefore I respect Liz and Liz respects me so it works both ways up here... I went to the World Champs in Jordan in march and liz was one of the team managers there and we got talking and she offered me some advice as I spoke to her about my concerns about home and she spoke about the setup here that she has going on. At first I wasn't sure, but I had known Eilish for a while through us racing together, and we started talking through MSN and she said to come up and see, so I spoke to my parents and they told me to go and visit. So I did and ended up not going back home. Being up here like everywhere else has its ups and downs, but as long as stay focused on the reasons why im here, I believe this is the right thing for me up here.

Yes, I suppose Liz has got a reputation for training hard and everything else, but before I thought about coming up here I had already planned out (I have my own career plan, that I wrote out of my own accord and it has my aims for each year up until 2016, the mileage I hope to do and a few other things)that I was going to run 90miles a week this winter and I took all of this to liz and she agreed with it, so its just finding something we are happy with and in terms of mileage and work ethic I believe we are quite similar, but also have different views on things, its about finding a happy meeting ground between what we both know works and what we want. Liz so far has proved to be a good coach to me, she pushes me hard, but also holds me back when I go to OTT with things. Its a professional relationship, but I also feel I can talk to her if I have a problem, so far so good. People may think that "well how can it be working, your injured for the first time" but injuries happen when your training hard and also when you dont listen to your body or tell your coach when something is 'sore' :D We have the same beliefs on my development as an athlete and have a plan that we will stick to but also may change if we feel the need.

Thank You Very Much, only just in one piece my legs are killing me :(

Hi Lily,

What was your reasoning behind moving to Scotland? Are you at Uni there as you mention starting work again. Just wondered your reason for baing yourself there and if it was to train under Liz Mcolgan and that was the sole reason.

If you work full-time are they quite flexible with your runing, or is it a part-time job whilst at Uni? Just wondered the reasoning behind moving all the way from Aldershot area to Scotland and if that linked in with Liz coaching you, and if so did you approach her to be your coach etc or was it the opposite way round and she contacted you?

As she is well kown for being tough as nails and was into high mileage i think, is that the reasoning behind your currently doing 85mpw and what is Liz like as a coach and her coaching style/thoughts on your development as an athlete.

Great trining an good to see you back running and in one piece.
