England Athletics 5000m Gateshead

Another 5000m... This time at the England Champs which are being used as the commonwealth games trials.

I had mixed feelings about this race in that the result didnt look that good and the time was slow, but I felt strong especially towards the end considering I had been on the front  and more or less pacing the second group where I was getting the full impact of the wind everytime I hit the home straight. I did let a girl come past me on one of the laps but found she was slowing it down so I went back on the front seeing as we were already detached I didnt want to lose anymore distance. I think had I had some help on the front of that group we could of got back in touch with the back of the front group where 4th place was 16.20... which i think some girls including myself are more than capable of running even in the wind. As it happened I didnt receive any help from the other girls and we ran round in a slow time of 16.37 and I came 5th.

The positives I took from this are that, Liz had told me to start winding it up with 1k to go... which I felt I was doing and then with 300 to go I could feel someone putting some pressure on and possibly trying to outrun me in the last bit having let me lead them for the whole race so it was nice to feel strong in this bit and I managed to run what I thought was a strong last 300 and I didnt let anyone past. This is something I havent felt in a while so its really given me a boost knowing im feeling more like myself again.

My next race could be a Junior League this weekend but I will double up over 1500 and 3000m I think but just depends how I feel. Am still waiting for an official to get back to me as of the rules, as I would like to guest there but shall see.

Hi Lilly,

I was a little bit dissapointed with how you ran the race. Watching in the stand I could not understand why you did not commit early on in the race when in your previous blogs you say you have been unhappy with the results from your other 5ks. I can only assume you wanted to get close to that world junior Q time and the way you talk in your blogs you think you are in shape to do that but each race I have seen you in, you never commit an seem to stay in your comfort zone. Obviously you will disagree with this but its just how I feel. Also I was a little dissapointed that when the winner of the race tried to shake your hand you stormed off in a huff, not very polite and very unsporting.

I hope you dont see this as an attack but an observation.
