The Final....And The PLAN.

Later on in the evening after the heats Ian got us all together for a chat to see how we were going to run the final, and let me in on the PLAN. Thankfully they hadn’t told me of the PLAN prior to the heats and just let me do my thing. Mo said he wanted it fast, and I volunteered to take it out. For me personally I would have hated to jog round and get out sprinted. I would have seen it as a wasted opportunity. So when asked to take a 3k out fast I assumed 2.35 would be sufficient, but not when Mo Farah is running behind!! His words were ‘2.33, quicker if possible?!’ The look on mine and Nick’s faces must have been a picture! Ha but I was excited and that was fine by me. I knew it would hurt but as some say, running is like boxing. Win, lose or draw, it’s going to hurt!! And that’s the way it should be.

Warming up for the final I was pretty relaxed, but up for it. There were three Spanish and three Brits in the final and I couldn’t wait to get out there and turn the screw. It must have been a shock; Crammy informs me he’s pretty sure Brits have never run as a team before so no one saw it coming. As I’ve said before I didn’t feel like I sacrificed that much. Realistically the best I could have hoped for would have been around 6/7 at best, so when a friend asked me for help to win our country a medal I was more than happy to help. He didn’t need to ask me twice!

Its funny 12 people in that final and all of them have a game plan on that start line, only three of us executed!!

The rest is history now. Mo won. He hurt, you could see that, but he wanted it the most! That was the difference. And fair play. What a run. I didn’t feel like I did too much to help (although he, his coach, and his agent assure me I did) and when he went past there was still so much to do!!

A few people said after the final that to take out and front run in your first major championship final is really tuff and takes a lot to handle the pressure, my reply to them is what I had to do was relatively easy compared with the pressure Mo had to deal with. For that he is a true champ. All I can say is I can’t wait for the summer!!
