Birmingham Games
With the nationals coming up in a couple of weeks this meeting fitted perfect into my plans. As I'm running a 3k at the Nationals, two 1500m were just what the doctor ordered.
Two races in one day though is never an easy task especially with today only having 90 mins between..
I was set a task today, I never like to think of racing as training but today was definitely a mix. Firstly I wanted to run the heat controlled, go out in 62's and come home strong. This planned out perfect. After sitting in for the first 600m which Tom Humphries lead I took over and went through 800m in around 2.05 (62, 63). I pushed on a bit as planned with around 600 to go as there was still a group and I still had to qualify (first two only). To my surprise I finally eased down to the line and ended up with 3.50.
As I still wanted a good workout today I wanted the final to be hard, but I also realised that I had to make this happen. Neil Gamester (who I train with) was in the exact same boat as me so we decided to go out from the gun and set it up rather than hope someone else would do the work and end up jogging round which would have been pointless. So the first 400m was mine in around 60/61, then Gamma was to take over through 800m at the same pace, then me again to 1200m, then race. That was the plan.
First 400m was bang on, high 60. Then it was Neil's turn, I could sense he wasn't feeling so great so at around 600 I took over again and pushed on. I was feeling really strong with 400m to go and I had alot left. However the leg turnover wasn't there and couldn't respond to Warburtons finish in the last 200. 3.48. Not bad for January!!
I was pretty happy with today as it was my first race indoors in a few years and I felt great. I didn't have a kick for a 1500m today but the bigger picture is the AAA's in a couple of weeks.
