Great First Week

Well it has been a great first week for me here.  I have done some good milage, been down the track, met some great people and the weather has been incredible so I have got a tan!!  What more can you want....The only problem with being here is the expense, seriously you have no idea until you get here how expensive things are.  For example we were thinking of going to the cinema tonight to watch Star Trek but it is nearly 12 pounds each!!  So an evening in I think.  I got 100 Swiss Franks yesterday and went to do a little shop and then a coffee with Kati.  How much did I have left? A big fat zero!  I am going to have to pull my finger out and get some money coming in fast or at least start running faster!!  Not complaining though, it has been great and have had the best week settling in.  As i said the weather has been great and we have been able to go down to the park in the middle of town and sit by the river.  We did get in on Thursday but it was still a cold 14 degrees but going up everyday.  The outdoor pool, which surprisingly enough is free is at 20 so that's pretty good, but there is something quite cathartic about getting in cold water and letting the current just take you down stream, and trust me it's fast!

So training has been really good, ran with a guy on Wednesday who has run 13.25 and 7.52 ish which is great and I am going to link up with him for a lot of my steady and tempo runs.  He introduced me to some guys down at the track on Tuesday, although looks like that I will not have too many middle distant guys to link with, but I knew that.  Besides I can knock out the 200's-400's on my own, its when I have to run k reps and the like that it is nice to have company, and that will happen come the winter.  So Tuesday I ran an hour in the morning and then 6 x 300 in the evening which went pretty well.  I am trying to get in 3 track sessions a week at the moment but things seem to be conspiring against me.  As I said Thursday was a bank holiday but I didn't know, so after a morning run I went off to the track in the evening but it was all shut up, and the fences too high to climb over!!  Fortunately there was a school next door that had a 150m straight of good old cinder!!  Not to be done, I decided to do a full warm up on the grass, drills etc and hit 3 x 10 x 100 turnarounds, which is a pretty tough session and it went well so in the end I was really happy.  WInd on to today and I again headed down to the track with Kati, so that she could take some photos for here.  Not going to happen, a track meet just about to start!  What to do.  Well the good thing about here is there are options.  It was a stunning day, so we quickly cycled home, jumped in the car and took a drive 10 mins out of town to a hill and I bashed out 10 x 1 minute on a secluded steep hill.  It was beautiful scenery, hard but thoroughly enjoyed it, and what i really need to get my legs strong.  I shall try the track again tomorrow!!

This afternoon was a nice walk into town for an ice cream and a coffee and tonight instead of the cinema we are going to watch the latest bond film which I still haven't watched and really looking forward to.  Right off for dinner and a nice glass of red wine.

Hi Simon, thanks for the comment. I am currently in Bern, which is not that high between about 1800 and 2000 feet. Could do with it a little higher but suppose that it all helps. I understand that there are quite a few road races around, but you are right quite often really good guys turn up. I think there was a 10miler here in Bern a few weeks ago and the likes of Lebed turned up. Think it was won in 48 mins or something! Which is a bit out of my league.
Still I shall just have to see what happens over the next few months. You are right though there are some amazing places to run, makes you appreciate getting outside and enjoying it. Hope all well with you and you are running well. Good luck for the season

Howdo, just interested in where you're living and if you're at altitude or not. My bro lives at about 900m near to Zurich out somewhere in the country and his place is similar to what you're describing! Beautiful scenery on your doorstep and loads of trails to run. Brilliant!

I did a winter road race in Zurich 2 or 3 years back "Silvesterlauf" won by a 13:40ish guy i think with the swiss marathon guy right up there too. There also seems to be a number of african guys in Switz too and they were out in force. I ran 2:59/km pace for a hilly 9km ish in the middle of zurich and was about 12-15th or something. A great event round a 4 or 5 minute lap with a mass participation race too and loads of people watching so it was great fun. Prob a chance for you to get some high quality racing in over the winter and maybe a bit of cash too! Think theres quite a few more similar events - one in Luzern for sure (which is a really nice place - well worth a visit racing or not).

Good luck settling in - I know all about the cash problems - my brother is always moaning about it!

Cheers

Sounds fun.

I trained my arse off in the morning and then spend 3 bloody hours washing the car.

Tip - Never wash a car in the direct sunlight.

Peace out.
