Mixed fortunes
First off sorry for the delay in my blogs. I simply have not had internet access for the past two weeks. My laptop is broken and now back to using a desktop, and I wasn't able to get that in my hand luggage!
So just got back from Bermuda and New York with mixed results. Bermuda was good, New York was bad. First off Bermuda was great, and I raced well to pick up second place in a road mile running about 5 seconds quicker than last year. I shall write more about both races in my race reports. Fortunately the weather was great, having come in to wind and rain, the sun came out for the entire weekend. James Thie and I managed to get a swim in some underground caves, had a great view over the water from our hotel balcony and got some good competitive golf putting done on the hotels little practice area. I love this trip and I love this Island, the people are so friendly and always make you feel so welcome and probably the main reason that I keep going back.
I had to leave Bermuda on the Monday the 18th and head up to New York, although I couldn't go to the meet hotel until the Thursday so I headed down to my Uncle and Aunties a few hours south in Atlantic City. It was great to see them and also my Nan was there visiting from the UK. She had no idea I was coming so was great to surprise her to celebrate her 92 Birthday!
Not sure if this had any bearing on my race in New York, but I felt so tired the whole week, and training did not go well. I was unable to get on a track or an indoor facility and was left to just run along the seafront. NO excuses for New York (again shall talk in my race report) but even when I headed up there on the Thursday, I was hoping to get a session done and turn the legs over but was unable to get on the track so did the best I could in the street. By the time I got to the race it was the first time I had put spikes on since June last year due to my Achilles injuries. I suppose running 4.05 off no specific training and pretty much jogging through the snow for the last 3 weeks is not so bad, but I was really disappointed. It could also be that I was a bit below the weather. Like I said I was feeling tired all week, and since the race a cold has broken out and I am feeling a little under the weather. Still onwards and upwards, hopefully this will be a passing thing and I will continue to train. The plan is to try and get on the indoor track which is about 50 miles from me here a few times and see if I cannot get some sessions together that will help. It is quite restrictive with times though as it is not a permanent facility and is shared with many other sports using the centre.
Other than that it was a great trip and met some cool people as always. Another good night in Coogans Irish Pub in New York with the Canadian contingent. Coogans is a running pub where the owner and punters all love running and there is memorabilia al over the place. They even have the meeting streamed live into the bar. If anyone is ever in New York you MUST visit this place, great people, great food and great beer. You can't miss it on 169th Street next to the Armory Track and it has a big poster of last years race featuring Rob Myers, Adrian Blincoe and yours truely crossing the line (slightly better than this year for sure!!)
That's it for now, shall update training and race report presently..
