Baby Runnerslife

I must of sat at the computer for 5 minutes trying to think up of a first sentence, and the best I could come up with was "Welcome to my Runnerslife Blog". Personally, I think that's a poor start, mind you, you could say the same for my debut at the World Cross the other day!! All jokes aside, thanks for clicking on me and having a read.

Hopefully my blog will give you an insight into what it is like to be a junior athlete in Britain, and going through the transitional phase of becoming a senior (I know, I'll be with the big guns soon!), hence Baby Runnerslife. Also, it may help get some of the younger athletes off Facebook and get them reading something else. They could find out what it is like to train at junior and university level and maybe find a useful bit of information or two. It may also be helpful for some of the juniors I am going to be racing so they can be nosey and keep tabs on how I'm doing. I'm joking, I don't mind who reads these. I've always been cool with giving out my training to people who ask, it dosen't bother me if people know what I am doing. Also, you can find out what REALLY happens when I train with Steve, he never mentions the times when he gets a good taste of my dust.

The big topic at the moment is the World Cross, and all questions will be answered in my race report. However, since then I haven't run, for a very particular reason. Today I did some cross training and yesterday I did some skipping (yeah that's right, I said skipping) and all the other days I did nothing. I'm going to be racing in the Southern 12 Stage on the weekend to have a run out for the team. Seeing as I haven't run it will be interesting to see if I'm fresh from the rest or frightfully rusty.

Thanks for taking the time out to give this a read and I hope you enjoyed it and the future blogs I do. Feel free to comment or ask questions below, don't worry, I won't bite. I also accept critism, but to be perfectly honest will probably just ignore it (joke!).

Keep it real.

University Choice

Hi Nick,

(My son, Rich is on the same course as you at Birmingham. ... runs a bit but not really competitively ... I believe you know him?!)

Firstly, well done on a great season.
Very impressive, keep up the good work.

Secondly (for Dave Francis) regards University choice ... (I am ex Loughborough) .... if you're an 800m/1500m runner you're better off going to Loughborough in my estimation. If, on the other hand you're more into X-country & longer distances (3K+) then Birmingham is definitely the right place to be at the moment.

Another consideration .... training along the canals in Birmingham might get boring. Here in Loughborough we have Charnwood Forest with hills, trails etc.

Finally, regards entry grades ... you can get into Birmingham (on most courses with Bs). For Loughborough you will probably need at least 2As. Forget the jock image, Loughborough is a SERIOUS academic institution.

Cheers,
Alan.

Uni and Running Choices

Thanks for your honest opinions Nick. Hoping to start a sports science degree course in Sept. My coach is persuading me to stick with Loughborough for its great facilities, reputation and top level training partners and opportunities for athletes, plus cheaper cost of living!
My parents are pushing for Brum as its got a better academic reputation. How tough is Bud on his charges? (as I need stong discipline to reach my goals in middle distance running) Have rejected St Mary's as too expensive living down there!
I am hoping to visit both on open days soon and then decide my future.
Who knows we could become training partners- pounding the streets of Brum!

Runnerslife!

Goooolab,
Do you manage to have any other life apart from your uni studies, training and racing? Know how hard it can be balancing work, social life and running!
Out of interest what would you say are the main differences (techniques, approach etc) between your 2 coaches- Bud and Sharpy?
Hope your getting your track spikes ready for summer track racing!

Uni Choice and Running!

Nick
What persuaded you to opt for Bham uni and Baldero over the acclaimed Athletics uni- Loughborough and Gandy?
