Caution with small injuries
The last few days have been a little nerve racking for me as on Sunday I had to stop on my run as I felt pain in my shin. Luckily it wasn't from the bone, it was the tibialis anterior which turns out I aggravated in the race on Saturday running hard downhill. I just stopped where I was, gave my car keys to one of the lads who ran back to my car and picked me up. I spent Monday aqua jogging and getting massage on both legs. My right leg was even tighter than my left so I found it strange I was only feeling pain in the left.
Again on Tuesday I was in the water this time replicating the session that the rest of the group were doing on grass. I found this very tough and my heart rate was racing high which is exactly what I wanted. After loads of rest, ice and anti inflamatory's I tested out my legs on Wednesday with an easy 35 on the flat.
I came through the run ok with some tightness but no pain. Again today I ran for an easy 40 and felt pretty much the same, just some tightness in my shins, so things are looking up for the Inter Counties and unlikely I'll have to pull out now.
I think had I not stopped on Sundays run I may well have been in a worse situation now and looking at more time off so I'd always suggest for the sake of finishing a run or doing a few extra miles just knock the run on the head and assess the injury there and then.
Fingers crossed everything goes ok on Saturday and I can help out the North East team in the Inter Counties.
