In The Mountains Again

Training has started to pick up for me now. I've been back running just under 3 weeks now and this week i'm on for ok mileage of about 70. So it's good to be enjoying my running again and feeling nice and relaxed. At the moment i'm out in Font Romeu on the UKA camp again training with 6 other lads- Steve Vernon, John Beattie, James Wilkinson, Michael Salter, Josh Gorecki & Chris Carter. It's a small camp this time round but I heard the next one in Kenya is quite popular with around 40 athletes going out in November.

It's been good out here so far. I arrived last Friday evening and I haven't really done anything too strenuous yet, apart from 6x2mins at tempo pace with Beattie on Tuesday, the rest has just been steady or easy miles getting my body ready for a long hard winter. I'm looking forward to that now, i'm back at the end of the month and looking to do a couple of races before my next training spell in Kenya with UKA throughout November before we all come back for the trials. It's a shame being away from home so much, I do miss being back there and it's not easy being away from my girlfriend Lucy who I spend a lot of time with normally and also my family up in Newcastle. I've got 2 little nephews who I don't see that often but it's great when I do! But at least I've got Skype to keep in touch for the time being.

I didn't really know any of the lads before the trip, apart from Steve, but John's just moved to Loughborough now to join my training group and he's a good lad so I think we are going to work really well together. The other lads from Leeds/Birmingham Uni I knew to speak to briefly but it's good to get to know them.

I've not really had a great deal to update about training wise, just a lot of slow easy miles. Hopefully the hard work will start to flow next week and i'll be able to get that heart rate up high!

Comments On "In The Mountains Again"

All trips are advertised on the UKA site and those lads applied and were successful in going. These trips in my opinion are not elite. They are a chance for athletes to live together and train together at high altitude and hats off to Ian Stewart for making it possible. I'm unsure as to why it's a small camp this time. I told a mate of mine to apply for Kenya, he's an u23 1500m finalist with a chance of making Euro u23 cross team and he's now going out to Kenya for 3.5weeks. I think some have this perception that the camps are for the top runners. I'm hardly a top runner, but I have aspirations and I want to make the most of the opportunities that are on offer. Same goes for Goreki and Carter, they were proactive and did their best to get out here to train.
Now when Thommo and Merrian arrive, 2 top runners, we will all learn a lot from those lads off the back of their European races.

Sorry but nobody on holiday here..! It's a good routine of running, eat, rest, running, eat then rest again everyday. I'll get some training pictures uploaded at some point

Attendance on UKA Training Camps

Hi Ryan,

Great to hear you're back on the miles and back at Font Romeu where you seem to have gotten great results in the past.

I was just wondering really, how an athlete not especially close to the top of the rankings goes about getting on one of these trips. I know Josh Gorecki has had a great summer and Chris Carter has been bringing his times down, but neither have GB vests to my knowledge. So I was just curious to hear how they got involved.
