Looking good for the 5
I've got my final 5000 this coming Saturday which I'm looking forward to doing. As mentioned in my last blog I had a pretty tough session yesterday morning which was 2x2k, 3x1k, 4x400 and 5x200 off 90 and 3mins. It went pretty well and I found it fairly easy as it was nice and relaxed until I worked the 400s and 200s just to build up a bit of lactic.
I had a little calf problem before the session, a similar problem to what I had back in March and I know a good massage will get rid of it so i've just got to keep my calfs loose for now and nurse them until I get a massage, so fingers crossed it won't bother me before the weekend.
I was going to run a 5k on the road this Wednesday up in Newcastle as I had to defend my title which i've won for the last 4 years since the race started but it's not great preparation for Saturday so I'm gutted I'm not doing it, but the coaches know best and it's their call.
It's also finally about time the sun got shining too! I've been waiting weeks for this bad weather to stop so it was great to be able to enjoy some sunshine during the session yesterday and on the run this morning. I hope everyone is making the most of it and getting out doing plenty of runs while it lasts!

Hi James,
Ryan Posted on August 13th, 2009From what I remember the course is relatively flat based on an 'out and back' to Hillsborough football ground apart from the fast downhill start and an slow uphill finish, well it was a slow finish for me anyway!
I remember it was deceptively warm that day and I didn't hydrate well enough, so get plenty fluids in.
You will probably reach 5k faster than PB pace due to the quicker start so don't be put off by this and save something for that last half mile as it's tough.
Best of luck with the race.
Hi Ryan.
James Gilbert Posted on August 12th, 2009I am running the BUPA Great Yorkshire 10km Run. I see that you raced there last year and was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on the course, conditions, good points, bad points etc.
Any advice would be great.
I hoping to improve on my pb of 34m 16secs - hoping to go under 34mins for the first time.
Fingers crossed.
Thanks.
Winter wear!
One problem with winter training-
John Posted on August 11th, 2009All them layers weigh you down and it is more restricted to run hard in rainsuit, tights etc!
I'm quite the opposite as I've always loved running in the heat, to a certain degree anyway. I just make sure I drink plenty beforehand and dehydration isn't that much of a problem.
Ryan Posted on August 10th, 2009It's those cold mornings where I need my motivation to get out the door with my 20 layers of clothes on!
Summer training exhaustion
Agree Ryan it looks like a bit of summer has arrived at last-
John Gibson Posted on August 9th, 2009However don't you find the heat hard to put in the efforts- especially on those longer runs?
Extra drinks help but its still tough and very tiring.
Bring bak those cold moning runs eh?
