Training has been going great out here. It's a different type of training to what I was doing back in May. Then it was very specific for the start of the summer but this time round it's just a case of getting plenty of running done and some tempo and hills to get strong.
I hadn't really done a great deal up to my last blog but in terms of quick running, since then I've done a nice 'steady' 55minute hill run which was on Saturday. I found a good up and down area and really got into the run and worked the hills. I started off at 54000ft and got up round 6000 at one point so the legs got a real workout!
I started off at a low down car park and ran through the woods on a gradual incline then went up over a very steep hill. I slowly worked my way down and then again went up another climb at 6.5mile to really give the legs a burn. Then I finished off nice and relaxed down the road back to the car. For the run I think I averaged 6:10 pace which was good on the up and downs.
Sunday was a nice long run to take my weekly mileage up to 75 which is good for this time of year and will now give me the chance to increase that over the next few weeks leading into Kenya and Monday was just a couple steady runs to get some more miles in. On Tuesday I did a threshold run around the lake here. I had 40minutes to do. I probably over cooked this a little as my average pace was a bit too fast at 5:20's rather then 5:30's. Even at 25 years old i'm still learning all the time about training and that was a shock to my legs because it's something I haven't done much of at all in recent years. My tempos/thresholds have always been 15, 20mins, sometimes building up to 30mins but now they are getting longer and it's a totally different approach, especially at altitude! It's good though because that is what is holding me bac
k at the moment in 5k upwards. So i'm looking forward to running the next threshold next week where I can relax a bit more and not over cook it.
Other than those two fast runs i've not really done much else of interest running wise. Last week I went down the track with a few of the lads and video'd them doing some drills and core. I thought I might as well edit it together and send it to the Athleticos lads and make it a feature on the site as it's quite interesting. Some of the drills i've not done myself so I integrated them into my plan last night.
The vibe on the camp has been good. The runs have been good fun with plenty of enjoyment and the run ins with the animals have been quite interesting. This morning 12 minutes into the run Goreki and Carter decide to turn back to the car because they didn't want to run past a bull. What a couple of whimps! I was a bit weary after seeing Vernon and Beattie run straight by it so Salter and I took a slight detour through the tress to keep about 15m between us and the angry looking thing. I can assure you it was a bull and not just a cow that we normally encounter as they're harmless.
Thommo and Merrian have now arrived with Nuttall. For elites, them boys sure like their late mornings! They've been running an hour later than us but I guess when you've ran 2:15 for the marathon and 27:29 you can do as you wish. Not taking anything away from them as they are training hard in preparation for the Commonwealths... If they actually go!
Beattie has been very upbeat about the Games but after seeing the pictures this morning on BBC (here) he's starting to think, "hang on, am I actually going to be going now?"
We will see in the next few days I imagine. The England team will do the best for those going out there and make sure it's safe if they do. Personally I don't think i'd want to go to a Games where there is a risk of illness, disease, injury!
One thing that nearly brought me to tears with laughter was Chris Carter. I've never seen such a clown in all my life after he decided to shave his legs. He disappeared into the bathroom on Tuesday evening for 2 hours with a disposable Bic razor. At this point nobody knew what he was up to as we all sat and watched the Inbetweeners.
The next day he had tights on so nobody could see his legs. Then after the run he was back in the bathroom for a further 2 hours, this time with a €10 women's Venus razor that he'd purchased earlier in the morning. After he emerged from the bathroom, a good 4 hours after he started shaving his legs the damage was visible to everyone. It looked liked he'd taken a Stanley knife and cut his leg hair that way. I would estimate at least 8 cuts on either leg, each around an inch long. He basically hacked his legs to shreads shaving off every hair from foot to ass. Maybe he shaved that too? I dare ask him.
All this was after reading on a LetsRun thread that Chris Solinsky had shaved his legs the night before he ran 26:59 and an anonymous poster had claimed this was the secret to his American Record.
I'll update next week on how things get on. In the meantime, here's some pictures of the camp so far:
