UK Champs Indoor 3000m
Every athlete hates bad days and that's all I can say it was for me. I was hopeful of a good run yesterday after opening up with 8:01 a few weeks back and having done some great training in between. I honestly though if the race went the right way I thought I could have a crack at the Euro time. Turns out the race did go that way but not for me, I got the worst possible start and I was spat out the back of the lead group in like 12th place. 19 in a final is too many. The Northerns a few weeks back were going to be heats if there was more than 12 so how do the UK Champs find 19 ok, surely they would have learned their lesson after last year. Oh well, it was same for everyone though. I just felt sorry for the guys on the 2nd row as every deserves to run 3000m not, 3002m.
I only remember looking at the clock once and seeing the leaders go through 400m in around 64 seconds and I was behind that. I then spend the next 8 laps trying to get through the bodies in front of me in an attempt to get moving for a quick time. By the time I got into 2nd behind Baddeley I was spent! My legs just didn't want to kick on. I knew it was my day at that point, but I was still in silver medal position and it's such a heart breaking feeling seeing the medals get taken away when back-pedalling. That being said it softens the blow in a way when it's your mates who go by you, I was chuffed to see Ross go so well. He's showing the talent he has and same goes for Jonny, he's a quality runner who has worked his arse off these last few weeks.
On reflection it's not all that bad, there's still one spot up for grabs at the Euros and there's 3 of us shooting for it on Saturday in Birmingham. I'm looking forward to putting the bad race behind me and getting a trouble free run at a quick pace now.
Finally I want to say a huge congratulations to Lewis Moses. The lad finally has his first national medal and there will many more to come from him. He proves hard work gets results. He's always had the talent and now his getting the confidence and showing it. His medal was the highlight of the weekend for me by a country mile, I may be biased as I train with him, but I could not be happier for him.
