So next weekend will be the Cardiff 10k where I will be racing and having not done the race for a while. I pulled this result out from 2004 and although I might have run the next year but I remember this one quite clearly for some reason.
I remember going into it trying to brake 31minutes for the first time but just missed out and remember Adrian Marriot (didn't know him at the time) flying past me coming out of Bute Park into the last 'K' and regretting not trying to go with him as I saw the result and the fact he went on to run sub 31minutes.
Aaron (best mate) came with me to watch and hold the bags and it was a sunny but calm day and as we set off I remember the Westbury runner, Rhodri Jones throwing an elbow when I tried to pass him in the first 800m as it was pretty cramped the opening kilometre.
Mark Morgan was pacing the race to 3k to try and help get the race going sub 29minute pace although I think he was suppose to be going to 5k but was only just back from time out of the sport.
I remember coming into the stadium and the clock ticking away past 31minutes and crossing the line very disappointed thinking it was the end of the world, I can also remember thinking how hard its then going to be braking 30minutes....which it was!
Some familiar names on the results there and there was also an athlete called Mark Jennings further down the list who ran 34minutes that day...he went on to run 30.28 I think, or somewhere around that. He was a lovely guy and last I saw he was about to have a baby, if anyone knows if he is still running (although will be pushing 40 now) let me know.
I have no idea who will be running next weekend but looking forward to running in the capital again after a fair few years. I hope we get good weather and although some things will have changed for certain like the club I also hope the time will be a little different too.
