Injured...Still

Being injured for an athlete is a horrible thing, maybe it's the unknowing of what will fix it or how long it will take to cure it, maybe it's the thought everyone else is training and racing and your slipping behind.....I think yesterday I realised what the empty feeling is, plain and simple just enjoying running! Sometimes you forget why you run when you're following training plans, always aiming for the next race, worrying about what splits you run on a session or how far you went on the Sunday run. I started running just because Dad used to run and I used to wonder where the hell he was going every night, I liked the feeling after joining him for a small run and I quite enjoy being by myself and seeing places that most people are to lazy to ever walk/run and see.

I am talking to most athletes here who have been injured (pretty much everyone) who take for granted how the body works when your fit and then when your not you wake each morning and the first thing you think of is your injury, you pray and hope that during the night your problem has been cured....then you step out of the bed and its still there.

The other thing you notice when your injured is suddenly you get left out of the 'group' normally you get invites and queries to race here and there, txts/phone calls for training, and just general running stuff....then one day that all stops, of course there are a few who still find the time to ask how your doing which is great and I suppose I'm quite lucky as there are a few from non runners like Danny and Aaron to runners like Simon Lawson, Wicksy and Pollard.....Andy Doel has been great and runs whatever I can do at the moment and just nice sometimes to complain to someone and slow up for me!

I am still doing the cross training and will pop this weeks into the training although you probably don't care! In fact I spent so much time in that pool these days I have just bought a monthly pass, I hang out with the early birds at get the different stares as I aqua jog....

  1. I don't think that guy can swim!
  2. Is that guy disabled.
  3. That looks fun.
  4. Hope he doesn't get in my way.
  5. Poor guy.

I will either come back stronger rob or jump in front of a train! hehe first week or so its quite enjoyable and a new experience and inviroment etc, and then at this stage it gets annoying.

NE - yeah as you say, you go to the pool (pray they have the floats to use or you will have to buy one) then jump in the deep end and start running. You should apparantly keep your back straight and just run normally. Try and get in before they lane the pool and after the oldie are in for less obsticles! I find the arms get tired quicker because of the resistance the arms arnt use to.....its not really that compicated 'NE' but supposidly the closest thing to running.

Hi,
Nightmare about your injury, I know how frustrating it can get. Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is aqua running ? do you just run on the spot in the shallow end or do you use some kind of buoyancy aid to simulate running without bearing ? Genuinely interested as I've noticed a few athletes on this site mentioning it.
Cheers,
Dec.

That could of easily have been a snipet out of my training diary, its a nightmare isn't it. The time out makes you realise just how much you love running and you'll come back stronger i'm sure.
