Alistair Brownlee....one word, inspirational!
Did anybody else watch the London Triathlon on Sunday? I did, and only by chance did I flick to it while cooking dinner because Lee was zonked out on the sofa having run a personal best over 10k in Tenby that morning (a very hilly course she tells me, trying to claim and extra 30s on the time of 43:30....a 3minute improvement).
By the time I switched on it was already onto the bike stage and the 2 packs were just about coming together. With the odd bit of wisdom from Jonathan Edwards who irritates me anyway with his continuous praise of God during his career to the point where him and the other commentator (think it was Stannard a Belgrave team mate of mine) claiming Alistair Brownlee ran sub 60seconds for the first 400m of the run having just jumped of the bike.....now, he was moving don't get me wrong but he wasn't doing a sub 4min mile pace, however maybe its just jealousy I can't run that fast off the line even without the swim and bike just before it!
Anyway the dinner nearly got burnt because I kept running back in the lounge to see how Alistair and his younger brother (Jonathan) were getting on having been about a minute down on the leaders coming off the bike. It wasn't long before the brothers had caught up and I was thinking 'that was ballsy' fair play to the two off them as they both went straight to the front and kept pushing not even taking a little ride for a 'k' or two. Again the genius that is Jonathan Edwards said 'This is going to be a sub 30minute 10k at this pace' just as at the bottom of the screen it said '18kph pace'....I wasn't the best at maths but I know that it would have to be 20kph to be smack on 30minutes let along under. Anyway putting the sound on mute I was just amazed at the effort Alistair was putting in, now if you don't know he blew up pretty badly in the last 300m so he must of known he was hurting and he was going to crack but he just kept pushing and as an athlete you have to admire that, no question!
Coming into the last 600m the Portuguese athlete pushed on with Jonathan now about 50m behind, Alistair went with him and Lee was shouting for him while I was thinking he is going to make it dramatic and just kick the last 200m to get the crowd going but when the camera looked back he had gone....his brother was now in second. I have hit the wall in the marathon with a few miles to go so know it can hurt but this must have been so much worse having swam and cycled, the whole body must have been screaming, as more people went past it took me back to that embankment when streams of runners ran past me which was worse than the pain in the body and I really felt for him but was impressed with such determination to finish that race no matter how many came past him. It would have been so easy to just pull to the side once 3rd place had gone, he knew that would happen before he went into that zone and he still ran into that place of pain to try and win.....truly inspirational!
I am not the biggest supporter of the sport although respect that athletes massively (know Marc Jenkins a little and the training he does) that do it but I suppose like other runners I am jealous maybe of the attention it gets and how good they are portrayed to be compared to the runners in this country when it is a sport that rules out a lot of countries/athletes due to the cost implications and the fact most Africans can't swim!
Yesterday though I was a big fan of triathlon.... or maybe just a fan or Alistair Brownlee!

You could apply your logic of triathlon to cycling, swimming, rowing and many other sports in that case!! But people dont moan about Chris Hoys many gold medals or Steve Redgrave.
Kealous - def correct!! Posted on August 25th, 2010Triathlon reaches a wide field, albeit i admit not the african nations like kenya, ethopia etc. But then surely the aim is to be the best over 3 disciplines???!! - so if you cant swim that well then tough. Thats like saying you would be the best decathlete if pole vault wasnt included!!!!
I would agree that i think a lot of runners are jealous of the attention that people like Alistair Brownlee gets, but I for one know the effort he puts in and if u break down the performances they are simply staggering.
Most top triathletes seem to just get on with it without all teh excuses we are so used to hearing from track athletes - again before you pull me up on this one, there are obvious exceptions! Mr. Don please raise your hand..........
Hehe, where shall I start with this one! Ok 'viewer' who unlike myself is happy to put my name to my comments s,o for this answer we shall us the name 'Mrs Viewer'. I can't see where I slated his performance as a tripple jumper (I also think hasslebaink is a rubbish on telly but a top football player) I stand by my view he is rubbish on the telly and I also stand by his constant god refrence which he even came to change his mind on. I can't read anywhere I said I was going to the olympics and I applaud you for never saying 'he/she is rubbish" you are a much nicer man than me......o hang on you just slated me so your not exactly whiter than White. Just for refrance I have run 14.11 so I would appreciate 'good club runner'!
