When is it cheating?
In sport especially these days and with lots of money involved, where is the line for cheating. For example the rugby 'bloodgate' scandal, was it cheating or clever? Why is taking stimulants like night nurse or insulin illegal but caffeine or glucose drinks not? Surely they are all performance enhancing!
In distance events it is illegal to take EPO and increase blood cells but with a haemoglobin level set at a certain number is it then cheating to make sure yours would be right on that level? It would also be wrong to increase your blood cells with injections but yet fine to go to altitude or buy a tent to increase levels of red blood cells.
In an 80's running magazine I read an article telling people how to blood dope, again is this really that wrong or just being clever and maximizing you're potential. In any sport winning is so lucrative would it be worth the risk?, as they say in business you have to weigh up risk Vs reward and at the top end now and difference to what some people have to live like in Africa etc, (I have seen) it would probably be worth a shot. Are country's helping people cheat (if that's what it is) as winning top level sport is very lucrative to the country, would federations help cheating (again, dependant on your thoughts) as they receive government money on the back of performance on the world stage and peoples jobs are at stake, and you will do anything to keep that nice well paid job would you not. You might even question governing bodies in trying to catch the 'cheats' as that would tarnish your sport and maybe loss of revenue and exposure on a very competitive market with new sports increasing in popularity all the time.
Why don't we make all drugs legal and then see who the fastest is, you might be surprised and find that records don't improve?! Then people may argue that the richest country will always win as they can afford better drugs....but isn't that already the case, that the richest country's already win sports like swimming, cycling, triathlons where it is expensive to take part and it is clear with a lack of African country's taking part in the later three sports.
Hay I'm just asking the question!
