Easter Egg relays, Saturday Morning.
I am slowly increasing the training and the foot so far is not reacting badly to it although it is still not 100%. I wont go into full training until it is but it is a lot better than a few months ago when anything hard would result in my foot then hurting for days just walking around.
So back to the relays...the Swansea team were having a little relay as part of training, a process to find the last few runners for the 12 stage team and to race against a Luton team down for some Easter training.
I was put in a team with Sam Walsh and a guy from Luton and I was off last and was starting to feel pressure for the first time in ages. I warmed up with a little jog along the seafront but I felt terrible, this could either be because I hadn't raced for a while and knew I am in rubbish shape or because I went out with a few couples and girlfriend the night before and had a fair few mailbus and pinnaple juice before rolling in at 2am.....the 9am start didn't help with this!
First leg runners off and Marc Hobbs team was falling behind but I knew I would need a good minute to win over him on last leg while Lewys's team was not far behind mine in 5th....eeeee. It looked like there could be a medal on when Sam Walsh came back in 3rd but 1st place was too far ahead with a couple of youngsters from Luton running sub 9minutes. I set off down the seafront knowing Lewys would be chasing me down, I felt awfull and although I didn't go quite flat out my legs just felt weird having not pushed it hard for 5 months! The cheeky devil (Lewys) even did a road runner noise 'Beep Beep' as he went passed but I was done in by half way and couldn't respond to the power that is Lewys and at the turn I could see Craig Hopkins and Marc Hobbs closing me down. I tried to draw on the experience of leading around Sutton park at National Relays but I was struggling to hold form and finally checked over my shoulder with 400m to go and happily saw they were not close enough to chase me down.
A good run out but by the looks of things it will be a tough few months to get back fit, I just the hope the foot gets back to 100% so I can at least run without the worry of pain again. (9.47 official time)
Having lost out on the prize of an Easter egg I stopped off at Sainsburys and just bought one to cheer me up!
It was good to be back in the group again and chat to a couple of the guys. I might have a run at the Welsh Relays this weekend if my foot doesn't react this week and see how I am over 5k, I dread to think!
