Confidence
As like all sports confindence plays a big part in sport, and this 5k was a perfect example. Lance Armstrong once said you cant fake confidence and it only comes from hard training and good racing....trouble is I only have one of those! I know I have trained hard over the summer and have sacrificed a lot of races to do so but in doing so it can dent the confidence a little, some of the races (Gateshead perfect example) where you're legs are just like lead weights and a constant pain throughout a race can put you off a bit.
Last night I should of run a lot faster than I did but I didn't for fear a failure, every lap although feeling comfortable running along at the back of the mind you remember the pain suffered before if you go to fast and don't want to blow up especially when you want to run well. The signs were there for me but I choose to ignore them:-
1. Laps were disappearing fast
2. I heard every shout from the crowd
3. I kept running into the guy in front
4. Felt like a training run
5. Stomach didn't hurt at all (usually get a terrible burn)
6. I made the gap up between Jon wills and Dave Webb (quite a few meters) within seconds
7. I was thinking about future races during the race
8. Kept putting off making a move
9. Put about 5 seconds on Dave in last 400m.
That all said there are a lot of positives to take from the race and I will! It has now given me a little more confidence to push on for the up coming races and it is still a solid time. I have only started to reduce the mileage for 2 weeks and still done over 80miles this week which is hardly what I would do if I was really trying to get a great time. It is the same exact time I ran at Manchester but the comparison of how hard each were is massive, and the fact I don't feel that bad today and will do 16miles steady later on proves to me the powder is still dry and more to come.....
