Prague 10k
I am standing behind a wall of Africans with 'Eye of The Tiger' blaring out of the speakers in old town of Prague. Sometimes I do wonder how I have ended up in these places running around!
As the gun went the Africans followed and were churning up the road with the offer of a car if the record was broken. There was a problem in that the lead car had floodlights on so it was hard to see anything really in front until the car disappeared into the night, even the flashing bulbs from camera's meant at times it was hard to see where your foot was landing on cobbles, tramlines and tight corners. By a couple of kilometres I was just behind a group including Matt Janes and Michael Johnson (fellow welsh men). I wasn't feeling very good, it is strange as the legs are just heavy and not lively while my breathing is fine and more than comfortable with the pace but I cant push it on. I try for a few kilometres until I realise I am going nowhere and drop off the pace. Every corner or patch of cobbles I go a bit further back.
The welsh girls where making a great effort to get around the course to give me a shout out on the twists and turns. I got a bit frustrated with one guy who was blowing through his rear end badly and all over the shop, the fact I was taking this in rather than pushing on showed me I was focused on the job in hand. As we crossed a bridge I went past him with ease as he hit a wall, by 7k though my legs had had enough and probably through a lack of focus that guy came back at me at the finish by which time I just wanted to cross the line and get out of there.
It was a fantastic atmosphere and place to run was very cool but not something to remember in years to come. I thought the other boys did a fantastic job for different reasons, Michael Johnson with tight calf's on cobbles....Matt Janes in full marathon training and Chris Davies coming back from slight injury. Also the girls were impressive with triathlete Non Stanford coming home first to the young Leah Dixon grinding out a tough run at the back after just returning from a break.
