Welsh Road Relays
I woke up and looked out the window and a sunny day with the trees hardly moving which is a good start as the race is on a wide open race circuit. Trouble was by the time I got to the race the wind was picking up and was a little worry. I was running for Neath 'B' team as it was likely to get disqualified even though I am a second claim member so couldn't risk running in the 'A's in case they managed to get in the medals.
It was delayed by a good 20minutes but finally the 1st leg runners set off on a 2 lap circuit where you ran all the way nearly full circle then around a cone and back, then do it again. So as the first leg runners came back I was warming up and being followed by Amanda (just seemed to pop up everywhere I was going!). I was giving a shout to all the guys I knew and as I started drills for the first time in a long time as Craig Hopkins pulled away to hand over in 1st place.
I typically forgot pins so borrowed off an incoming runner and got my vest on before jumping in the pen for my incoming runner. Meanwhile James Thie had closed a bit on Lewys (Swansea harriers) but those two club runners had done a lap before I set off so wining was not on today!!
I went off and within 400m knew it would be a struggle but tried to relax and focus on Marc Hobbs and Tom Marshall about 600m up the road heading out on their last lap. As they hit the wind they started to weave around as neither wanted to take the wind so I closed up a bit but they soon turned back and I couldn't latch on. As I huffed and puffed my way around I saw Marc sprint Tom for the win as I headed out on a lonely 2.5k. The legs were in a state of shock having done very little effort in 5 months but could hear Mark Morgan shouting at me so tried to keep pushing through it.
I was glad to see the finish line as the foot was aching a bit but I don't think I am in shape to run next weekend against the top guys. You never know with relays though as guys can pick up knocks last minute but I think I will be cheering them on rather than running myself.
Need to get this foot sorted though before I carry on.
Simx
