Stress
Having been discussing stress this last few days I thought it would make a good starting point for a blog topic. We see people getting stressed in all situations daily, whether this be work or just life. Then there are those who seem to get stressed before a race or even a training session. Is this stress any use or is it just having a negative effect on our performance? I can get stressed at times, but I suppose I have learnt to deal with this over the years. When young and carefree I can't remember getting stressed about anything. Now I feel the stress sometimes before big events. Thinking about this in more detail I suppose I feel more stressed at lower key events where people expect you to do well. Regardless of who else is in the race, others just expect you to win. Having ran some very big events the stress at these seemed little compared to other smaller races. Take for example the European Mountain Championships in Turkey, 2011 and the World Mountain Trophy in Alaska, 2003. I was under no believing that I was going to win these events, even though I was ready to go out there and give 100% once that gun goes winning just didn't enter my mind. As it happened at both these events I had great races and do believe this is becuase I wasn't wasting energy or time worrying about others or my finishing position.
I believe dealing with stress is a personal skill and people go about it in various ways. I see runners go very quiet before a race or the total opposite and come out of themselves. Dealing with it I believe is the key and can effect your performance on the day.
This week has been stress free for me! My mileage has remained high and I have hit my sessions hard and enjoyed my running. The next week is going to see a smaller week mileage wise as we intend to take it easier before the Northern Cross Country.

Mileage- 120 for the last two weeks. Going in the right direction. For me now it is a question of running miles v recovering. Sometimes the days just are not long enough to fit everything in. I am trying to get a quick nap now before a run but struggling to fall to sleep. Maybe if I stop reading the interent it would help! I might gradually increase some of the runs and my Thursday evening run is to get longer yet.
Andi Posted on January 23rd, 2012My stress doesnt come from my coach. He pushed me to run well and where possible to run well for the team, but he believes in me and the training we have done and therefore the race day is made as stress free as possible. It sounds like your coaches motivational speech before your race isn't really helping you!!!
Stressful coach
My coach gives me stress before a race as he pushes us to get the results for the club. this is ok if its a general pep talk and to motivate us but I think he demands and expects too much from us all the time.
Davie Posted on January 22nd, 2012During pre race warm up I feel relaxed and keen to get stuck into the race but then his 'chats' get me wound up and I feel stressed going to the start line.
Is this common and the norm and have you felt this also?
High mileage weeks
Hi Andi
steve Posted on January 22nd, 2012Re your high mileage week/s
Some of the top elite international guys often do 150ish mpw as the norm during the run up to a marathon. Do you ever see yourself reaching these heights and do you think it is necessary to put in this very high volume of miles in order to succeed at the top level of distance running?
Have you ever or will you ever reach this number?. believe Bedford and co did this amount back in the day!
