Trainingsession 9th - 15th August

Sunday - PM - 2 hours steady on the cycle lane in York with Lila on her bike. Kept it quite steady and legs were ok at the end. (18 miles)

Monday - PM - 50mins steady with Sam on the canal (7.5 miles)

Tuesday - AM - 40mins easy (5.5 miles)

PM - 6 x 1km on the track at Ladywell with Andy Rayner. We shared reps and my legs felt heavy but strong (2.53, 2.55, 2.52, 2.53, 2.51, 2.49). Was good to do this session with someone, and did a good 3mile warm up before an after (9.5 miles)

Wednesday  - AM - 45mins steady along the canal. Felt a bit tired, but kept it easy (7.5)

PM - 45 mins steady with my coach around Brent Park. Was good to catch up with Nick and I think I killed him a bit, but he did pick a hilly route! Was great to get off the canal and do some running in the forests. (7 miles)

Thursday - REST. Wowsers. A rest day....

Friday - AM - 40mins easy with Sam. (5.5 miles)

Saturday - AM - London Pride 10k. 31.45. Not overly happy but oh well. (9 miles)

69.5 miles. An easy week, with a bit of a crap race. But there's a lot of training in my legs from the past few weeks and more to come, so I'm confident that saturday doesn't mean too much....

My coach

I would say I could work pretty independently but I stay in regular touch with Nick and he is straight talking and doesn't have to do much to motivate me. He's coached me for 11 years now and we've not always seen eye to eye but when it comes to training we believe in the same principles and so it's been a very easy ride in that respect! He doesn't have to give me any fashionable pep talks no, normally a 'You know what you have to do Ben? Just get out there and do it' is enough.

Gay pride isn't really something I feel that strong about - it's just at a convenient time of year for me!

Motivational coaching

Hi Ben,
As a distance coach I would like to know how your coach motivates and encourages you to continue the hard work and efforts?
Does he use mind imagery/mental/psychological pep talks that are now fashionable with top athletes and their coaches?
Thanks

Hi Ben,

Nice to read your blogs thanks for sharing.

You mention that it was nice to catch up with your coach - I am wondering how often you are in contact with him? Are you quite an independant athlete or do you communicate regularly with your coach?

Is gay pride something you feel particularly strongly about?

Thanks
Tom
