No Snow in Font-Romeu

After coming back from Chamonix in the French Alps i only had two days at home to gather myself before heading out to Font-Romeu in the French Pyrenees. Within those two days i returned to Lincoln to defend my title from 2010 and managed to pull off a comfortable win in a time of 30.16. It was nice to get a race under my belt as it seemed like a while since my last and it will be a good 6 weeks till i take part in my county track and field champs.

I flew out to Barcelona to then head up to Font-Romeu on the Monday afternoon kicking off the week with a few short easy runs. The advantage of being here is having the chance to concentrate on training full time as well as the altitude benefits. The location is also perfect for long runs with copious trails with a near by track within a mile of the apartment. So far the weather has been ideal. As i remember last year we woke up one morning to over a foot of snow which slightly hampered a day or so of running. Fingers crossed the weather stays the same as it has been for the past week.

I have been in Font-Romeu now for 10 days and every session has gone to plan so far. Since Saturdays gruelling session i have felt a massive improvement on my easy aerobic runs. After being here last year i have been able to build on that experience and move forward. Most off the sessions i have planned will be based around 5k training.

Since being here i have had time to consider what my next steps will be in terms of races to open my season with. I plan to run in my Nottinghamshire County championships over 800m and 1500m. These will be my first track races of the season to be held at Mooreways stadium in Derby. This should be a good warm up for the Loughborough International where I'm hoping to pick up a Scotland vest in the 5000m.

I am training alongside Matthew Bowser who i found was a great athlete to train with last year.
The toughest part about training in Font romeu is the initial breakthrough period of getting used to the altitude, easy runs at 8 minute mile pace feel like 6.30 pace. I have learned to hold back, relax and run as i feel rather than chase the clock.
There are a few bars, resturants and creperies to check out here so its not too secluded.
It would be nice to run around 1.52 and 3.47 to open the season with.

Thanks
