So far so good!

The track season is now underway. I can gladly say ive begun to find my track feet where i left off last year. Training has been going unbelievably well since returning from Front-Romeu. I have recently sat down with my coach to plan my race diary, in order to target specific races and plan out the training accordingly. I will be hoping to hone in on my 1500m ability for the major competitions this season.

I have so far kick-started my season with some reasonable performances at my county championships. It was nice to get a run out over 800m, as it been 2 years since my last 2 lap race; Due to suffering a groin strain last year i was unable to compete in the shorter events. Not only did it hamper my ability to race at the shorter events, but i also had to restructure training to suit that of a 5000m runner. To my surprise i ended up with an unexpected 5k Pb, which in the end wasn't such a bad thing. With all the injuries out of the way i am now able to focus on what i really enjoy, which is 1500m training.

As well as competing in my county champs at the weekend it was also great to be able to sit back before my race to tune into the coverage of the Great Manchester 10k. It was another inspirational run from the boy Chris Thompson chasing Haile Gebrselassie all the way. As well as Chris running well, there where some other breakthrough performances and great times from a number of top Brits, which was good to see. Watching all these Pb's being smashed just made me want to get out there and run myself! The Manchester 10k will be a race id love to target in the future but i just feel like there's unfinished business to attend to on the track.

Unfortunately, i wasn't selected to represent Scotland in the 5000m ahead of the Loughborough International this weekend. This came as a surprise to me, but the fact i've been given a guest place in the race actually makes no odds. This gives me the perfect opportunity to stick one to the selectors and prove a point.

Bring it on!

20x200m, 10x400m, 500m, 300m, 200m x 4. So a lot more lactic tolerance and quality works outs compared to what i was doing this time last year. I will probably throw in some really fast sessions closer to races such as 150m reps with full recoveries.

I don't think i would be prepared to change such important plans in future to gain selection for a domestic competition. Thanks for your support.

1500 m training

Bruce
What kind of specific 1500m training will you be doing then? should be a break from the high winter mileage!
Perhaps you will be able to put in some decent times after a good winter season and the altitiude training!

Sorry to say Bruce but it looks clear to me the main performance aspect within criteria is the trials. Especially with it being such an early event in the calendar. You hadn't raced no the track therefore needed to prove form or do the trials. Maybe plan your return differently next time?
Best of luck in the race, great to have the Scots in there.

1. The scottishathletics nationality qualification shall apply.

2. Athletes must be current members of scottishathletics

3. Selectors will make their selection based on nominations from the National
Coaches taking account of:

• Scottish rankings and performances at National Open/Loughborough Trials

• Current and, where applicable, head-to-head form

• The nature and quality of the event at which performances were achieved eg presence of qualified officials, use of automatic timing, licensing status of facility etc

• Athlete availability

• Any other relevant factors eg fitness status, ability to compete at the required level, commitment to and conduct at previous international opportunities

4. Where the selection for an event involves an athlete with whom a selector is closely involved e.g. as Manager or Personal Coach, then the selector involved will play no part in the selection for that event

5. The decision of the selectors is final. Any correspondence regarding selections must be forwarded to the Chair of Selectors via scottishathletics for response. No other response will be deemed official

6. All international selections are dependent on athlete full acceptance of the terms of the International Athlete Code of Conduct issued to all selected athletes

7. Any athlete substitutions resulting from changes in athlete availability, fitness status, injury, illness etc occurring post-selection will be based on named reserves from the selection meeting. Any further substitutions that may be required beyond this are the responsibility of the Head Coach and International Teams Administrator on the recommendation of the relevant National Event Coach.

The trial race was only a week after my return from altitude so it would of been reckless of me to do it. I also read the selection criteria and it wasn't compulsory for me to take part in the trial to gain selection. The 5 hour drive to Glasgow was hardly an incentive.

if you want selecting then do the trial race maybe?
