City of Lincoln 10k
This was my 2nd time of running the Lincoln 10k. It was another near perfect day with only a slight breeze in the air. Like last year it was a last minute decision to enter. I had previously tried entering the Derby 10k but was unsuccessful due to such late notice. As defending champion i was offered a place on the start line at Lincoln so i took up the challenge once again.
On the day i had my competition set as Matt Bowser of Lincoln decided to take on the pace for 90% of the race. I was feeling slightly heavy after spending the past week in ski boots so i wasn't sure how to negotiate my tactics. I decided to sit off the pace and work hard over the final 5k if i felt good enough. I managed to close down a 20 metre gap between 5 - 8k which put me in striking position over the last mile. I took the lead for the first time in the final 2k and looking up at the clock i thought i was in 30 minute range. I decided to kick hard over the last 1k which saw me open up a leading gap of around 8 seconds to secure my 2nd City of Lincoln 10k title.
I'm kicking myself now for being so close to 30 minutes after such a relaxed approach to the race. My aim is to enter a fast 10k over the next 12 months and hopefully come away with a good sub 30 minute clocking.
Finally i would like to mention how friendly and supportive the people of Lincoln are. Not only is Lincoln one of the most picturesque courses in the country it has one of the most enfusiastic atmosphere of any race I've ever been to. I had other fun runners and spectators just walking over and congratulating me with such excitement. Its times like this that makes all the hard work worth while. If anyone is looking for a 10k i would recommend this one over many others!
