The Curse of the Common Cold

Another week & another setback in a season which is proving to be very frustrating.  This weekend was the Scottish Championships & i was looking forward to trying to defend my title & make it a 5th win in a row.  After the previous weekends two races i had an easy day on the Monday & on the Tuesday i had what was probably the best training session i've had since the start of the season.  I woke up on the Wednesday feeling a bit congested but put it down to hayfever & a high pollen count.  As the week progressed & things got a bit worse it became obvious that i actually had the cold.  I was keen still to run & went on Saturday to run the heat, the heat went as planned.  I started to feel a bit worse on the Saturday evening & by the Sunday was feeling pretty miserable.  I went to Scotstoun & began to warm up but it was quite obvious i wasn't feeling 100% & decided that it would probably be best to withdraw & try & get myself healthy for the World Trial's in 2 weeks time.

I'm sure many athlete's have found themselves in this position as i have many times myself,i don't often make the right decision about what to do.  I trained & raced through a similar thing at the beginning of the season & it took me much longer to recover from it than i should have so tried to make the sensible decision this time.  I know that there will be people who think i done the right thing & others who will criticise me for being too cautious but i took what i felt to be the right decision.

I seem to have had a run of small illness issues this year but i hope to finally clear them all up & make a decent end to the season.
