1 down 12 to go
The title might sound like a track session, but unlike most track sessions the first rep isn't usually the hardest, unlike my first week back in Kenya.
I had a bit of trouble with the Lady checking me in, and she made me pay an extra £30. I knew my bags were a little over, so that's not a problem however I think it should be one rule for everyone. The people boarding the plane ahead of me, had about 30kg in hand luggage, and they even told the air stewardess that they hadn't been charged extra for this, to which the air stewardess replied "you got a generous one".
I arrived in Nairobi airport last Tuesday the 14th feeling pretty good, the flight was nice and the person sitting next to me was good for a chat as well, which helps when you're sitting beside them for 9 hours.
Off the plane and into the Visa control area, and the problems continued. The immigration officer that was dealing with my visa tried to convince me that I overstayed my visa the last time I was in Kenya. I stayed from the 29th August until the 4th November, so less than 70 days, but it included days in August, September, October and November. I knew I hadn't over stayed, but he wasn't convinced that having been here for "four Months" I must have stayed more than 90 days. Eventually I had to add all the days up for him in each month to get him to allow me into the country.
On to baggage collection and here I found that the strap had been pulled off my bag, this was a little bit annoying, because it must had to be someone just chucking it about, luckily enough nothing was missing or broke, so not a real problem.
At security control I was asked why I had so many things with me. I only had two bags, and one hand luggage bag. I told the guy I was here to train so had a lot of shoes with me, as I was planning on running a lot. He had a bit of a laugh at this and just allowed me through.
I had to get a matatu to Eldoret as I missed the last morning flight out of Nairobi. I was actually looking forward to this as I had never taken a matatu from Nairobi to Eldoret. When I got to the matatu stage, one was nearly full, therefore the boot was also nearly full. This meant I could hang around for another matatu, but it might take an hour or pay for an extra seat and put my bags on the extra seat, so that's what I did.
Getting back to Iten and back the house I had stayed in last year was great. It didn't take long for some of the kids to notice I was back and within 15 minutes my house had about 20 kids roaming around it.
I managed to get sun burned the next morning while out for a run. I didn't even think it was that strong out, but I should have known better. My skin hasn't really seen the sun since I left Kenya last November. With the temperature getting into the thirties during the day it doesn't take long for me to burn - lesson learned. http://woozor.co.uk/free-10-days-weather-forecast/weather-forecast-of-iten-in-kenya_107_4251_5952_en.html
A few days ago I started to feel a bit rough. Last year when I arrived it was my birthday, on day 4 that I got ill, this time around it was day 6, but I'm still feeling a bit rough. I'm assuming it's just my body getting used to the local food again.
All in, I've had an awful first week. I wasn't even thinking about any of the other stuff, but then been in bed for 2 and a half days not been able to keep anything down made me think, it can only get better. On a plus I've already lost 3kg, so I'm well on my way to loosing 7 before I arrive back in the UK.
Thanks for reading, hopefully the next 12 reps will be smoother

Sounds like your nonchalance towards weight has finally been broken down by the enthusiasm surrounding the weekly weigh-in!
Tom Posted on February 24th, 2012Have a good time out there; wish I was back in Iten right now.

Sickness
You could have easily picked up something in the UK before you left, perhaps that's it, either way, get well soon, and I hope your training goes as good as it did the last time you were in Iten.
Craig Posted on February 22nd, 2012Best of luck out there this time Dan, I look forward to reading all your blogs.

Getting sick is the best way to lose weight without running. Hopefully you look like you've got AIDS (but don't actually have it) by the time you get back!
Dave Campbell Posted on February 22nd, 2012Remember to get the bench press in for lung strengthening...
Go well Dan, I'm sure all the hard work you do will be rewarded this time.
Murdoch. Posted on February 22nd, 2012I remember your last Kenyan blog and you got a lot more than running out of your time there. I'm sure it will be the same this time around.
Take care Dan,
Murdoch.
