Greenock Road Mile

Pass the salt, I just dipped under 4. Well it happened I got my body to cover 1 mile in under 4 minutes, and I still lost. This race in Glasgow has always being quite fast. Chris Mackay and Ali Hay dipped under 4 minutes in 2009, and last year lots of guys got very close to the 4minute barrier again. I have wanted to run in the past two years but couldn't with exams, so I was delighted to make it this year.
Run along the esplanade this years course was ran in the opposite direction to the previous two years, which meant we had a slight uphill finish which didn't help. I thought it would seem longer than it actually was because we were running in more or less a straight line for a mile, but it flew past.
I was feeling pretty good through the first 400, but then at half way I certainly wasn't comfortable, and when Derek and Chris started to pull away from me I though my race was over. the lads got a few metres on me and I battled through to 1200m just adrift of them. With the finish in sight I tried my best to get back in touch with Chris and Derek, but couldn't and it wasn't until the last 100m I actually caught Derek.
A great race and certainly an awful lot better than just doing another track session by myself. Although I am under no illusions that it's a sub 4 in the true meaning of the term, it's still quite nice to know I'm in decent enough shape, after the past 6-7 weeks.

Congrats Dan. Looking forward to keeping an eye on your upcoming track races.
matt Posted on May 12th, 2011Are you sponsered by SIS, or why the logo?
Are you sure there was little wind as that's the only way Pollard would manage that time over a mile unless he has a twin just as ugly that swapped with him half way through!

Thanks Noel and PJ, hopefully it's not a once off.
Dan M Posted on May 6th, 2011Regarding the wind, apparently it's the calmest it's being for the past number of years, on the warn up I thought it was slightly windy, but during and after the race I didn't notice the wind at all.
Thanks for reading
Well done Dan... Delighted for you and good luck with your quest for sub 8 in the 3k and the whole track season...
PJC Posted on May 6th, 2011Well Done Dan, Excellent running. I would say you are the first Portlaoise / Laois man to dip under the 4 min mile mark?
Noel M Posted on May 6th, 2011Wind
How windy was it, I believe the previous sub 4 minute miles ran as you say in the opposite direction, but it was also extremelly windy that night, no doubt playing into their hands.
