Camp Kenya - Matt Pierson
published on
Well, seems Mr. Pierson is really into it now, killing off partners like there is
no tomorrow! The patterns of train, eat, sleep and repeat two to three times
per day seems to be paying off. Some tummy problems last week have been
cleared by reducing beans in the diet and now all is back on track, his
biggest ever week and the next 4 will see similar or maybe a little higher with
some longer sessions. Last Saturdays 3 x 5km was, I think it was tough for the
lad!!! But before coming back to UK he will also repeat that and gauge progress
and maybe do 6 x 3km off 3 minutes. Keep it up mate!!
Simon Tonui heads to UK this week ready for Bath and road relays so it will be
interesting to see how he performs as Matt has been thumping him in training!
REPORT FROM CAMP KERICHO - Matt Pierson
Well after a couple of weeks back in the UK and a new Pb at Brass Monkey Half
(65.35) I am back in Kenya. When I 1st came out to Kenya on the 2nd Jan I
wasn't in very good shape I had been having problems with a couple of injuries
that's why I missed Ribble Valley 10k over Xmas, but my Physio (the Leeds Rhino
head physio) got me back so I could start training when I got to Kenya. To come
back to the UK and run a PB and for it to feel so easy was a good sign.
When back at home Marathon training started, but it is so hard to train on the
snow and ice (good luck to the lads getting out there and doing it) but for me
I couldn't wait to get back to Kenya and start the real work. Well I have been
back now for 3 weeks and training hard, doing some very big session like
12x3min off 1min and then 8x1min off 30seconds, and the long runs have got
long with my longest so far being 38k. I think this is what has let me down before
in my marathon build ups before, I never ran any further than 20miles so I'm pleased
to get some longer stuff in. I am feeling it but this week I'm starting to feel strong
and starting to Last week was my biggest mileage for a while with 127miles and I was
get fit.
As you have seen Paul is back in the UK now so I am out here on my own which
makes things a bit harder, but the time is flying by, because the training has stepped
up I seem to be a sleep a lot more, its not that bad of a life really!

38k longer runs
Matt
John Gibson Posted on March 5th, 2010so perhaps our elite marathon guys should take note and start introducing some really hard longer runs like the 38k you put in, and survived, and is starting to show benefits in your recent performances.
If the Africans can do it so can we- coaches start planning!
How often would this kind of session be done (weekly or less?)
We are supporting you back home Matt
Thanks for spending a little time to give us an insight into your training Matt, and life in Kenya. The very best of luck with your training. There are many who wish to see your hard work paying off and perhaps it will give you moral support to know that many are watching your progress through RunnersLife. Look foward to another report, if you have time?
