Gold and Bronze for Rebecca Hambrook and Dave Breen - Welsh Masters Indoor Championships
22-02-2012
The Welsh Masters' Indoor Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre produced dry throats, good times and two superb medals for Rebecca Hambrook and Dave Breen. Mens 1500m Event: Dave, now back to fitness, achieved a new PB of 5:53.38 on his way to a Bronze in the M55 1500m and it really was an excellent run. In an indoor 1500m you have to negotiate 30 tight, banked bends compared to the 14 gentler, flat ones of the outdoor version, so an overall PB, run indoors, is a significant achievement. Ladies 1500m Event: Rebecca took the Gold in the F60 in 6:48.62, which was less ...Read more
Gold and Silver for Anthony Powell - Welsh Masters Indoor Championships
21-02-2012
You may have read earlier in our web News, about Anthony Powell in Malta, getting in some warm weather training during his preparation for the Welsh Masters Indoors Championships at the Cardiff NIAC, last Sunday. Anthony was aiming to build upon his Indoor success last month, when he won the 800m Welsh Masters Gold medal. This time Anthony was contesting the 400m and 1500m and we think that he has been very harsh on himself since the Championships, claiming that: - "The races didn't quite go as planned, I'm still lacking in experience as far as track racing goes but ...Read more

Porthcawl Runnerslife at Gwent XC League (Brecon)
15-02-2012
The following report is produced with contribution from Rebecca Hambrook. Race Report: On a beautiful, crisp morning with the brush of Winter over the ground, our intrepid trio set off to strive for glory on the Fields of Brecon. The journey there, in itself, worth the effort, as we passed shaggy ponies amidst frost stiff moor grass and trees glistening with ice, the low Sun sharply defining the peaks. A perfect day for racing really and good performances by our runners. Dave Breen, our only male representative, had his best run since last Summer. Recovering from a fall, caused by ...Read more

Porthcawl Runnerslife Race Report(s): Ladies Team Report: (courtesy of Rebecca Hambrook) Against the stunning background of hills, castle and lake we sank into the mud waiting for the off. Luckily all the field managed to pull their studs and spikes out of the ooze in an obscene slurping chorus. Hi-Tide Boxing Day Run - Lack of a Full Results Service
08-01-2012
Disappointment has been expressed by runners who took part in the Porthcawl Hi-Tide Boxing Day Run, in that "race" results were only produced for the first 51 finishers. When asked on behalf of some of our club members as to whether they had the remainder of the Boxing day fun-run results, the following reply was recieved from the organisers:- "We only decided to record the first 50 runners as it is time consuming waiting for everyone to finish as some walk the course and so that the working members involved in the event could enjoy the rest of Boxing Day." Porthcawl Runnerslife at Brecon 10 Miles
09-08-2011
Report courtesy of Anthony Powell: Race Course: The race commenced on the Brecon AC 400 metre track, with 1.75 laps taken in before the runners ventured into the lanes adjacent to the clubs training facilities: - The start of the course was relatively downhill and also appeared very fast, which is great if you can manage to run down hill fairly quickly. However, many runners prefer to run uphill and along flat surfaces as steep descents put tremendous pressure on the poor leg muscles and joints. Although the race started and finished on the running track, ...Read more

TENBY MARATHON: Two of our members made their way to the pretty Pemrokeshire town of Tenby last Saturday in readiness to tackle the Full Marathon: - By Sunday morning and race start our numbers had unexpectedly doubled and we had four members ready to tackle the Full Marathon. Well not quite! Two were ready to tackle the Full Marathon and two were "giving it a go!" POOR ORGANISATION: Geraint Lewis (our man of steel) turned up on the day for a Sunday morning run but our Gabriella was let down badly by the race organisers, when there was insufficient coaches (only one) laid on to transport runners ...Read more
Porthcawl Runnerslife at Swansea 10K
28-09-2010
SWANSEA 10K: Following on from the Cardiff 10K just two weeks ago it was now the turn of the Swansea 10K, to see if they could outdo their Welsh city competitors. You may not think there is any rivalry when it comes to running events but when you listen to the post race discussions it is clearly evident. The residents of Swansea always feel out done by Cardiff, possibly due to their location further westwards down the M4 corridor and the extra government funding that Cardiff may receive, but when it comes to the 10K they seem to have the upper hand. Here you ...Read more
Porthcawl Runnerslife at Don Holloway Hilly 4
26-09-2010
Thanks to Dave Rose and Paul Ford for the the following report on the Don Holloway Hilly 4: - Dave Rose: Upon reaching Maesteg I noticed something different this year to the previous two years, it was'nt raining. That was a first! The organiser's gave the usual speech before the race stating that if your running on anything flat, you've gone off course. The horn sounded and the race started, a down hill start meant a very fast start and couple of Brackla runners took of like whippets. After about 700 meters, the course then started to climb and then the lungs ...Read more

Porthcawl Runnerslife at Cardiff 10K 2010
13-09-2010
CARDIFF 10K: One may expect the capital city of Wales to produce the best of road running in Wales for the club runner, particularly as the event is regularly designated as a Championship event. However, for one reason or another it has failed to produce the goods over the years and one must ask as to whether this year was any different? The pre-race hype claimed that the Race Director (Fun Run Director may now be more apt for this event) had "made the fastest course to date". Not sure the runners would agree that this was a valid claim when they had ...Read more

Ceri Thomas finishes 2nd in London Triathlon over Olympic Distance
12-08-2010
The Thomas family did us really proud last weekend in the London Triathlon . There were mixed fortunes but overall it turned out to be a very sucessful day: - Ceri finished a superb 2nd in her category over the Olympic Distance and now has a firm hold on the bragging rights until the next family venture. Jeff suffered after a real struggle in the swim, which on reflection was expected as no specific training was undertaken in this discipline. Zowie who holds strength in her running was unfortunate to experience a puncture in the bike ride, which took her out of contention for places. Ceri's ...Read more

Inspiration for Beginners, Walk/Joggers
24-07-2010
This is an inspiring article written by Stuart Grabham, a member of Porthcawl Runnerslife and it is reproduced in his own words:- This is I, Stuart Grabham back in 2008 and very overweight. I may have been smiling on the outside but I was getting very depressed on the inside. By November 2008 I had decided that enough was enough, 2009 was going to be my year. I was going to loose weight, get fit and leave my old way of life behind. January 2009 I waited until I started back to work after the Christmas shutdown and the first thing ...Read more
