"Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique that is used by athletes and physical therapists to inhibit overactive muscles. This form of stretching utilizes the concept of autogenic inhibition to improve soft tissue extensibility, thus relaxing the muscle and allowing the activation of the antagonist muscle
This technique can be effective for many muscles, including: gastrocnemius, latissimus dorsi, piriformis, adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, thoracic spine (trapezius and rhomboids), and TFL/iliotibial band. It is accomplished by rolling the foam roller under each muscle group until a tender area is found, and maintaining pressure on the tender area for 30-60 seconds."
I Have been suffering with a few niggles and heard about the foam roller at the club and fo just over £10 I thought it was worth a try, I know there are different prices for slightly different sizes but I got mine for £12 which was about 12inches. I have used it before runs but I tend to use after at night when watching telly.
To be truthful there is not much to it really but the simple ideas are the best and after the initial shock of how sore it can be and using your weight is more than enough it's a great tool to have under the bed for those days when the legs need some help.
If you are doing sport regular and your muscles ache then this is for you! For the price (3 pints in London!) it is at least worth a try and I think you will wonder what you did without it!
