Review

First of all thank you to RunnersLife for giving me a few of these gels to try, with a marathon coming up I have been going through a lot of gels!

First glance at the Shotz gel was it looked exciting and really cool and a bit smaller than some of the other gels I have used. The first time I used one was early one morning before a run to work just with a glass of water to see if it would give me a boost at 6.30am, it was the 'lemon and lime' flavour which was really refreshing and easy to take on board, the main problem I have with gels is the taste of some of them but this was nicer than most I have been using. After 15minutes I headed out and I did seem to be a bit more lively than normal without that empty, drained feeling I usually get.

I have also used on training runs and you can really feel it having an effect, one run at 16miles I was starting feel drained and took a gel which gave me a second wind. They are quite thick unlike some water based gels which means I would say you need some water with them and the flavours were a bit hit and miss with me (was not to sure about cola or the vanilla one) but they do work and small enough to fit in the small pouch in my shorts.

Good Points

  • compact and small
  • very easy to use, some gels are hard to tear to open while running
  • Looked great
  • Consistancy was ok to digest
  • Some really nice flavours (Lemon & Lime, Berry & Banana)
  • Work!! Really feel it give you a kick on long runs
  • Good before early morning running if you don't want to eat

Bad Points

  • Price is a little more than some at £1.50
  • Have to take some water on board unlike some water based gels

Conclusion

Really nice gel, would use on long runs and race day for sure. I am lucky to have someone on the bike to hand me water when training but for those not lucky enough for that may want to save them just for race day and use water based ones on long runs. Also a bit of trial and error with the flavours but sure there is a flavour for everyone!

Comments On "Energy Gel"

I have been using these gels for a while now, along with the electrolyte tablets they make. Not had any problems with them. I rather like the cola ones and find the Wild Bean with 80mg of caffine rather good. I have been using them on long sunday runs without the water as I just can not carry a bottle of water with me easily. So it is possble to use them without taking water on boatrd. Obviously in a race you have access to water as you use the gels.
