Font Romeu - Week One
Well, I almost have one weeks training done in Font Romeu and I am really enjoying it!

This is the view from outside our appartment.
I travelled to Barcelona with a few of the St Marys lads and Craig Winrow on the 6am flight. It was good to get out there early as when we landed we didn't have the first idea how to get to Font Romeu. After some dodgy driving from Tim Burt and a lot of broken French and Spanish we got there!
The drive from Perpignan to Font Romeu was awe inspiring. The snow covered mountains, cork screw hills and villages perched on the mountain sides were unbelievable. Eventually we arrived at our destination at 1800m altitude.
The first couple of days were spent doing easy jogging. There is a huge variety of places to run and the weather has been great, in the mid to high teens, which is perfect. On Thursday we did slightly faster efforts and it was only then that I noticed the affect of altitude! You notice it in a big way the second you try to run a little bit fast.
Saturday we joined the UKA athletes who are staying in the same complex as us. The session was 6 by 2 minutes. I decided to do 8 by 2 minutes for a more aerobic workout, as did a few others. In the picture below you can just make me out in the green shorts around rep 6 having blown a gasget!

Today we did a long run around a glacier lake at about 1500m. It was nice and relaxed running along the endless trails with Luke Gunn, James Walsh and David (Can't remember second name).
Time to rest up for more training next week, the plan is to be into more normal training by Wednesday or Thursday.
Well done to the lads who completed the marathon today as well. Great runs from Lee Merrien and Kairn Stone. Also Matt Jiggins just coming in a minute or so behind Padrag. Sorry Matt if you tried to contact me I have no coverage!
Talk soon

Funding and trips
Hi Michael
Rory Posted on May 1st, 2011Athletics Ireland have organised a warm weather trip, which is being run now. They tend to run them once or twice a year,
I decided to go to altitude instead to try it out. This is the first time AAI have orgaised an altitude trip and I hope they do it again. They have paid for my flights to and from and accommodation while they are here also.
Thanks for the questions and sorry about the delay!
Rory
Hi rory do athletics ireland host any warm weather tarining/altitude training camps? if so How often do they do them and where do they go? Did they fund the rest of your trip once they arrived?
Michael Dullagan Posted on April 24th, 2011Big D, I am funding the trip until the rest of the Irish arrive on Friday. Myself and 5 others are staying in an appartment where the UKA people are staying, we are all paying to stay. On Friday I move to where the Irish team are staying.
Rory Posted on April 18th, 2011Would be nice if it was all free. I am spending euros like they are going out of fashion!
Hi rory. Just wondering who funds these trips? I know gb run them regularly, but seeing as your irish and you traveled with and trained with the gb lads I got abit confused :/
