Watford Open 3K

Second again! But I was pretty happy with this race. I like racing in the evening, and Watford is a beautiful track, it's also a little less windy than Bedford!

I called over to the lads after lectures and on our pre race meal of microwace pasta and wine gums we felt ready! We travelled down in Ollie Crux's little Ford Fiesta. Mc Court fell asleep on the way there, he was up at 7 working so he needed a power nap.

I got the worst start possible in the race. I was boxed in for the first 200 completely and only for Tim Traynor (another St. Mary's athlete) I would not have gotten out of lane 1 for a long time.

I worked my way up gradually to Colin, who was banging out 64's looking really comfortable. At 800m I was finally on his shoulder and we got to work. Colin led a lot of the race, with 1200 to go Colin started to slow back to 65/66 and with 1k to go I took it on and shouted at Colin to come with me so we could get some sort of decent time.

With 200 to go I felt that Colin was not near me so I kicked for home. This time I got caught with 20 metres to go! Colin ran 8.07.4 and I ran 8.07.8 - equalling my P.B set 2 years ago. I reckon I will run sub 8 minutes in the Summer, I just have to fit in a  3K race!

Both of us felt like we raced tired. But it's all good, it's early days and we know we are in good nick.

Well done to the other St. Mary's boys who raced and Rose Anne who ran 4.14, Kevin Skinner ran a good race off little speed work and Steven Cannell is back on it despite his.. ahm "accident" in Portugal!

Can't wait to race feeling really fresh. That will be nice!

The next race will probably be Watford again in 2 weeks, looking forward to it already....
