Steps to success
It’s 3 weeks since I last updated and i’ll not lie, I was pretty down back then and I knew something wasn’t quite right. I couldn’t put my finger on it- the only think I could of was that i’d given everything I could in training and racing for such a sustained period of time.
I seen the doctor the Wednesday after Crystal Palace and he took some blood. As I waited for the results I took a break from running and just relaxed and tried to take my mind off things.
My results came back a few days later and I was told I had low Magnesium and Vitamin D. This gave some sort of explanation as to why i’d been feeling so lacklustre. I ordered some magnesium supplements which I was advised to do and waited for them to arrive.
In the mean time i’ve been relaxing, seeing my mates, trying to clean up in the poker house game we have each week but that’s impossible when Donaldson plays any two suited cards in the deck!
I’ve taken took 2 weeks off doing nothing and this week began running by doing a day on, day off. I also began taking my supplements but they aren’t the best things in the world to take. I haven’t quite felt right yet but things are starting to improve. My body is slowly getting used to the tablets and my spirits are rising and my motivation is coming back.
This is a new week now and i’ll be looking to run every day and hopefully get a decent low volume week in the bag as the winter slowly commences.
I can’t believe how quickly the summer has passed by, I feel although I didn’t get what I wanted from it so i’m disappointed on that front but it’s been a good learning curve and next year i’ll make adjustments so things go better. It’s on to the winter prep now, and the long grind begins. At least the football season is back so attention now turns to Fantasy Football, I have a lot to make up for after my performance in it last year!
I best get ready for my run, my brother and I are off to practice false starts in the park as it seems the in thing to do at the moment.
(I've brought my training up to date as far as I can. I will copy the rest from my Garmin onto my training spreadsheet then post it onto here.)

I have had my coach advising me on a suitable build up and I believe in what he tells me so that's all that should matter surely.
Ryan Posted on September 1st, 2011I had my down period and now i'm ready to go again. I've looked back and I think i've identified what went wrong and where so i'll sit down with John when he's back from Daegu and discuss my future plans
If you are off running for two weeks, then run every other day for a week, is there any need to start running every day. Why not 2 days on/1 off for 5 days and build up. Remember you had to rest and you don't need to be flying by early October

Jon E Posted on August 31st, 2011Did you consult your coach John Nuttall and if so did he give any advice/help and support at all during your low period? Did Mick offer any help also?
It happens to us all and perhaps your busy athletics schedules over the past 6 months are taking their toll, plus possibility of overtraining/burnout.
Take note for next year!!
