Neuss, Germany 6k
5k race I thought it was, well just an hour before the start myself and the others were told it was now a 6k! To be honest it didn't really bother me that much as it was now going to be a pb if nothing else, I know it was a bit frustrating for some of the other guys as they were hoping to get a time on the board for 5k and see what shape they were in but I know I wasn't in great shape so if anything it took the pressure off.
There were only 20guys in the race so I was a bit worried about coming last but the heat was the main problem as it just didn't seem to cool down at all but the up side was the massive crowds that came out to watch. I love the narrow parts of the course where people were 4 deep screaming and clapping as you ran through and apart from a few sections of the 4 lap course you get a real buzz off the crowd with them all clapping together as you ran through the start finish.
I did get a mention at the start having come 5th here last year but I was hoping they would forget about me! I could hear the announcer all the time mentioning 'Wicksy' and was hoping he would get to the line first. Meanwhile I was just trying to keep my legs moving and get through the awful dry mouth on the first lap, I came out of the back early doors and I didn't even try to get involved as it would have finished me off, especially with 'Wicksy' taking it out at a decent pace. I was in my own world putting one leg in front of the other passing the odd person who was flung out of the back of the pack. My lungs were burning and stomach in knots but I was enjoying it, I hadn't been able to push hard for so long, on the last lap with lactic starting to try and fill my legs I was thinking about all the time I had to do aqua jogging and the disappointment every morning when I would feel the pain in the foot.....I tried to push through.
I am sure people will think 18:35 is rubbish for 6k, well it is really but I was happy with it....happy to be pain free.....happy to be racing.....happy to feel pain and the challenge of excepting it or pushing through it. I was really pleased for Wicksy to run well and the others out there and if anything I am more determined to join him and close that gap between us.
Good Times
