Back On The Road......

Well there's been some good and bad news on the running front over the past couple of weeks since my last blog. The good news is that I have been able to do some albeit limited training, including the odd session here and there, and some steady running. The bad news is that running is still quite sporadic on a day-to-day basis and being able to run one day means that it's more likely that I won't then be able run the next. I don't actually feel too unfit and if the injury was to magically disappear tomorrow then I think I could be back into full training within 1 or 2 weeks so that's a small positive to give me some hope.

Since my last blog I've been back to see my physio for some deep tissue massage on my gluteus medias and lower back. When I first started running I hardly ever saw a physio but in the past year or so I think I've more than made up for that in the amount of times I've now endured the pain! If my physio's diagnosis of an inflamed sciatic nerve in my lower back proves to be correct then it's quite likely that it's not something that is going to improve overnight as it has probably been building up for a good few years.

My physio has given me a whole load of exercises to do in order to improve my core strength and loosen off the muscles in my lower back including using a Swiss ball, thera-band and foam roller. These exercises are taking me a good hour or two each day to get through and although they haven't cured the injury altogether I'm sure they have made a difference and improved the situation enough to enable me to do some running without less pain than before.

Last weekend was the southern cross country championships at Parliament Hill and I went along to watch my fiancé run in the senior women's race. It was a typical cold day with the familiar muddy conditions, which seem to be ever-present on that course. I've never been a good spectator and being there to watch rather than run was quite tough. Congratulations to Neilson Hall for his win in the usual muddy conditions and to the rest of the Bedford team for their team win.

So it's back to the physio for me next week and continuing with the exercises. Fingers crossed next time there will be more good news on my rehab.

Until next time...

Wicksy.

Sorry i havent come back to you sooner on these questions!

Yes the truth is that the exercises i have been doing are mind-numbingly boring and take quite a long time to get through, but it's no longer than i would have been spending running so i'm just having to grin and bare it.

I've never really done any aqua-jogging but i do swim to keep fit when i'm injured and also done quite a bit of cycling in the past.

As for half marathons, my original plan was to run in the Fortis City-Pier-City half marathon next month but i'm not sure that i will be in shape to race now. Will have to see how the next week or so goes...

Cheers.

Rehab

Hi Phil
Is the physio recommending any massages or aqua jogging to help you ease back onto your normal training routines at all?
Do you find the excercises he has recommended boring? 2 hours per day seems alot man!
