I am a 23 year old dreamer who enjoys nothing more than taking running that step further and completing ultra endurance runs. I thrive off the 'runner's high you get when you go distances other people can not comprehend. I use my sheer guts, determination and passion to help others to carry me over hundred's of miles.
My running career has only taken on form over the past 4 years, and started off in the most glamorous of races - the Llanelli Half Marathon, a 13 mile jolt along the peninsula. Having completed the 13 miles in tact my legs were burning but still felt like they had a little something left in them, so the following year I signed up to run the Las Vegas Marathon.
You mention the word Las Vegas and the scene of a sun soaked, baking city in the middle of a desert comes to mind, however this could not have been further than what greeted each and every runner at the start of the race. A brisk breeze in the air making the freezing temperatures even harsher on the skin, soon made it clear the reality of what laid ahead along the 26.2 mile route. Lets just say it was a very emotional and humbling experience for both the body and mind, but I loved every second of it, I seemed to enjoy it more the greater it hurt, the further I went, the greater the pain but the bigger the smile on my face.
As soon as I crossed that finish line my mind was thinking, what else now, what would be the next step, where could I possibly go from here. After returning home to the U.K I spent months searching for that next challenge, some off the hook marathon that really captured the imagination. Then it just hit me, it did not have to be a marathon, 26.2 miles is no easy feet but I wanted more, I wanted more miles and I wanted more pain. I wanted to run from 'A' to 'B, and that distance in between could be as far as I wanted if I designed my own Ultra Endurance Run.
Having always been fascinated by the USA it felt like the perfect playground for me to have an adventure, speaking with friends and family we had our different views on how to run it but we all decided the run should be from 'B' to 'A', Boston to Austin. A 2000 mile long and winding road lay between the both cities and this was it, this was my next challenge. I guess most people say from here that the rest is history but this really was the kick start to my ultra endurance running career.
To date I have completed two half marathons, one full organised marathon and these are the only organised events I have taken part in. I have however created, designed and ran my own bespoke runs that go over ultra endurance distances. The' Ultra's' include a 2000 mile run from Boston to Austin, a non stop relay around the edge of Wales, a 105 mile non stop solo run from Aberystwyth to Cardiff, numerous 50 and 60 miles runs over in the U.S.A and a couple of fun runs (35 miles ) along the taff trail.
These are only the beginning though and the list of runs I will complete keeps growing on a weekly basis. It really is unbelievable how far some peoples legs can carry them, but its even more shocking how far your mind is willing to take you. Ultra running is something I love and hope to keep pushing the boundaries of throughout my career, I just hope you guys find it interesting having an insight into what it takes to prepare for such 'epic' events.
